Based on my back of the envelope math, I'd ballpark this attack is costing high five to low six figures per day (USD) to run, but access to existing botnets could lower this. This should definitely be raising the eyebrows of state cybersecurity actors.

Wouldn't 10 Tbps make this one of the largest DDoS attacks ever? Or do they only record them if Cuckflare, Azure, or Google write a blog post about it?

Microsoft wrote up some attacks on Azure, they claimed 3.47 Tbps was the largest recorded attack in history. This was back in 2021.



But it only lasted 15 minutes. I don't know if that's the total attack attempt time, or if that's measuring the amount of time a customer could feel the attack before it was completely mitigated.

If KF is eating 6 Tbps, that puts it near the top of all attacks ever. If it's sustained for a full day, that might be unprecedented.

ETA: Cloudflare claims to have mitigated a 7.3 Tbps attack in May 2025, that lasted 45 seconds. Given the other numbers in the article, 6 Tbps would put KF's current attack at roughly the 3rd largest DDOS recorded.

Spoiler: not even numerals

But TBH, it may be more likely that the 800 Gbps observed is not an even 1/8th split that implied 6 Tbps total. Something in the routing may have spiked a larger load to that provider. 6 Tbps sustained would have the entire Internet policing infrastructure issuing reports and chasing down state actors.

None of that diminishes Null's challenges or the work he put in. It's just weird that someone would aim an attack nearly double the size of the largest on record, for nearly 100x duration, at a target like KF.
