Psych the TV Show 2006-2014 - What do you think about it?

I am currently binging this show. No politics, kind of goofy and sometimes quite clever/quick witted with the jokes.

It's the kind of brainless things I like to watch when I feel like watching something without really watching it.

Me and my parents adored Monk, and I think this was made by the same people or at the very least was promoted and advertised heavily around Monk, so we watched the first 2 episodes. I'm not sure if I just went in with the wrong expectations, if the show takes a while to find it's footing, or if I was just a retarded kid with bad taste, but I didn't care for it and neither did my parents. I might like it more if I watched it these days though so who knows.

God, by today's standards even The West Wing feels like it has no politics.

Psych's all right. I remember enjoying a few episodes but I wouldn't go out of my way to find it to watch again. Was this the one where Buffalo Bill from Silence of the Lambs plays the main cop or the one where the "Goose-lookin' Man" from the first episode of Deadwood plays the cop?

Law & Order is pretty much unwatchable (not that it was ever great). And now everybody needs to be filling in a quota. And you can't make fun of this and that... It's a bit sad what's coming out lately.

That's one I have not watched in very many years, I'll add it to the queue.

It's different from Monk because the main character is fun and quirky by design, whereas Monk takes the other approach where he is still funny but kind of against his own will. Both are hyper performers with their own issues and these are what make them "better than the cops", so I can definitely see a parallel between the formulas.

It's the trope of "quirky genius solves mysteries". See also "House" and "High Potential".

This trope rests on how much you are willing to put up with how much you think the main character is an asshole.

I never saw him in anything else. In the show, (I have watched 5 seasons in a couple of weeks), he is consistent enough I can deal with it. He might be an horrible actor, but they made the role for that in this case.

However, I could not stomach High potential. And I don't even remember why, so it must have been fucking terrible. My best guess is I gave it three episodes and gave up. I remember being very irritated by the main character, and the script making her look like a retard with incredibly retarded guessing games she somehow wins every time.

I don't think the shows compare. At least the set ups in Psych are good, and we barely get a drama backbone for the show (maybe 4min out of 42, as it should be). I don't even remember this abomination, just I thought it was stupid.

It's a show I'd never go out of my way to seek out to watch but if it's already on or if it came on after something I was watching I wouldn't turn it off.

I honestly found it wholesome at times, likely due to the main leads since they're actual buddies in real life. It also makes me chuckle because Gus is pretty much if Sam from Holes got reincarnated in modern day, and I'm surprised he's not in many other roles, he's great on camera.

I need to do a rewatch, though. Gotta build back up my DVD collection.

I liked it. They had a lot of fun cameos over the years, Val Kilmer, Shatner, Christopher Loyd etc. Thought it was cool they would bring in actors from movies they very obviously liked; Breakfast club, karate kid, princess bride etc, those I think were recurring roles too so it was obvious they just enjoyed working with people they grew up watching. Also thought it was sweet to tribute nostalgic movie with their halloween episodes too. Show was cheesy, but in a cozy way for me.

My former best friend loved this show. He would call me the same nicknames that Gus would get called like MC Clap your Hands. The show is harmless fluff in the same vein as House or Monk. I liked the actor who played Lassiter. Classic from that USA line up. Preferred Burn Notice myself.

Anyway look forward to the Cary Elwes cameos and don't forget the post-series musicals. I enjoyed Psych back in the day, and I remember being extremely disappointed when I finally had a smart phone and could order a Psych phone case. The case they made for the iPhone 3 was a nice rubbery material that actually provided protection, but I had an iPhone 4 as my first smart phone and that case was thin, useless, plastic that broke when I tried to put it on.

Burn Notice was good but aside from their runs coinciding I don't see it as a competitor with Psych. What was a competitor to Pysch is the Mentalist because it was basically a less fun ripoff.

My mother enjoyed this show a good bit. She goes for the quirky-not-a-cop-but-still-solves-mysteries shows ("Murder, She Wrote", Psych, Monk, Father Brown, Sister Boniface, etc) and this show had the right blend of it for her. I never minded watching it myself if it was just what we landed on, although the characters being almost deliberately obtuse when the script called for it (a necessity in this particular kind of crime dramedy) annoyed me sometimes, I can say it's a decent show, and if you don't wanna watch the entire thing, just look up a list of the Top X episodes and go from there.

Kilmer and Llyod's cameos are some of my favorite scenes in the series. If one watched nothing else from here, watch them.

Saw every episode ten years or so ago when ION would marathon every evening. Juliet was a cutie, and even the middle-aged police captain was kind of a babe. It was funny and kind of middle-of-the-road but at least you could watch it and not have to worry about getting a race lecture or hearing jabs at whichever Republican was pissing off the showrunner that week. Leverage was kind of the same way. And The Mentalist is absolutely a ripoff.
