UK British News Megathread - aka CWCissey's news thread

https://news.sky.com/story/row-over-new-greggs-vegan-sausage-rolls-heats-up-11597679 (https://archive.ph/5Ba6o)

A heated row has broken out over a move by Britain's largest bakery chain to launch a vegan sausage roll.

The pastry, which is filled with a meat substitute and encased in 96 pastry layers, is available in 950 Greggs stores across the country.

It was promised after 20,000 people signed a petition calling for the snack to be launched to accommodate plant-based diet eaters.

But the vegan sausage roll's launch has been greeted by a mixed reaction: Some consumers welcomed it, while others voiced their objections.

Cook and food poverty campaigner Jack Monroe declared she was "frantically googling to see what time my nearest opens tomorrow morning because I will be outside".

While TV writer Brydie Lee-Kennedy called herself "very pro the Greggs vegan sausage roll because anything that wrenches veganism back from the 'clean eating' wellness folk is a good thing".

One Twitter user wrote that finding vegan sausage rolls missing from a store in Corby had "ruined my morning".

Another said: "My son is allergic to dairy products which means I can't really go to Greggs when he's with me. Now I can. Thank you vegans."

TV presenter Piers Morgan led the charge of those outraged by the new roll.

"Nobody was waiting for a vegan bloody sausage, you PC-ravaged clowns," he wrote on Twitter.

Mr Morgan later complained at receiving "howling abuse from vegans", adding: "I get it, you're all hangry. I would be too if I only ate plants and gruel."

Another Twitter user said: "I really struggle to believe that 20,000 vegans are that desperate to eat in a Greggs."

"You don't paint a mustach (sic) on the Mona Lisa and you don't mess with the perfect sausage roll," one quipped.

Journalist Nooruddean Choudry suggested Greggs introduce a halal steak bake to "crank the fume levels right up to 11".

The bakery chain told concerned customers that "change is good" and that there would "always be a classic sausage roll".

It comes on the same day McDonald's launched its first vegetarian "Happy Meal", designed for children.

The new dish comes with a "veggie wrap", instead of the usual chicken or beef option.

It should be noted that Piers Morgan and Greggs share the same PR firm, so I'm thinking this is some serious faux outrage and South Park KKK gambiting here.

Última edición por un moderador:
Lost my usual farm cap somehow (a lovely Valtra brand baseball cap that I'm very proud of), so had to do today in a crufts bucket hat, looking like a cross between benny hill and a fat britpop reject.
The new lambs were having brilliant fun meeting the ducks for the first time, and the goats didn't bugger off into the neighbours field for once.
Looking forward to doing absolutely fck all tomorrow.
Might want to ease up on the power level mate. Not a lot of Benny hill looking Jarvis Cocker impersonators work on a farm.

That depends where you live.
It's the only time I've truly felt like "The Grey Man" .
But thankyou for the safety reminder, it's much appreciated.

Didn't see this reported on here - seems Keir has torn up police pensions as well.(X) I have no love for the police, but I am intrigued as to how he thinks cutting the pensions of his attack dogs will play out long term.
1/ Police officers who gave decades of service to this country have just had their retirement plans ripped up overnight. The Government has quietly cut the lump sums available to retiring officers in the 1987 Police Pension Scheme - with immediate effect.
🧵

2/ The change follows a Treasury decision to increase the SCAPE discount rate. That sounds technical. The impact isn’t.Officers retiring from TODAY will receive almost 5% less cash lump sum for giving up the same amount of pension than an officer retiring last week.

3/ In real terms, that means some retiring officers stand to lose thousands of pounds overnight. No warning. No transition period. No protection.Just a sudden reduction to retirement benefits after decades spent policing the public.

4/ Some officers have only recently received retirement quotations & benefit illustrations based on the OLD figures.People make life-changing financial decisions based on those numbers:
🏠
mortgages
💷
debts
👨‍👩‍👧
family support
📈
retirement planningThe goalposts have been moved.

5/ The Police Federation is seeking independent actuarial and legal advice on:
▪️
the scale and justification for the change
▪️
whether officers who relied on recent quotations may have suffered financial detriment
▪️
What legal remedies may exist

6/ PFEW National Secretary John Partington: “After decades of service, the ‘thanks’ retiring officers get is this: government quietly shaving cash off a hard-earned retirement overnight. It’s a blatant case of picking the pockets of police pensioners & we will not let it stand.”

7/ Police officers cannot strike. They cannot negotiate pay freely. They spend careers missing birthdays, rest days and family life in service of the public. The least they should expect is certainty and fairness at retirement.

8/ Yet again, policing is being treated as the Treasury’s balancing item.Officers are simply expected to absorb the hit.Add your voice to the thousands who have just

Also god can these fucking 'right wing' social media accounts shut the fuck up about vigilantism and stop spreading rumours. It pisses me off when I don't know if a rapist has actually died.

Wonder if it's cut to keep people working longer? How many were going to retire soon and so they made their pension less forcing them to put more in before they can? Might be an attempt to keep what few piggies they have left on the hook.

My money says Reform, as the designated opposition they have pretty much become, will have restoring that in their manifesto soon.

While that is part of it as noted in the article the police cannot strike over this. It's a chunk of money the government can free up with no real fallout (to their mind). Police reputation is in the toilet so the wider public don't care, people who invest in pensions for their retirement are the filthy "rich" Greens want to tax into poverty so their voters who's not paid so much as NI never mind tax in their lives can continue to not work and those directly impacted have no obvious recourse.

This is of course not how it will play out in reality.

The Scottish Greens fella, on a student visa, turns out to be a liar

What is the point of researching an article discrediting his working class identity if you're going to pander to his bullshit non-binary gender identity?

If he can pretend to not be a man, and this newspaper goes along with it, why wouldn't they also go along with anything else he pretends?

Lets have a fight : Best non-alcoholic drink for this weather?
Tea, you bloody heathen. A nice, hot cup of Yorkshire’s finest, with just a splash of milk.

I can’t abide squash. It always tastes somehow dry to me. Remember those plastic squash cups with sealed tops that you used to get in the 70s & 80s, with a sharp straw to pop through the top so you could drink it? Classic of the school trip. Dried your mouth out worse than eating naked cream crackers. Truly horrible way to treat kids roasting under the midday sun at West Midlands safari park.

Please tell me you meant 27C instead and that was just a typo... Even if that's the case, let me know when it hits 37C. Then, you can complain about getting crazy from the heat.
Fucking 27C? At that point I’m sleeping in the local Debenhams. Posh shops have aircon, they can’t make me leave.

@Otterly you say it’s cooler up north, did you forget it was Donny that hit 40C a few years ago? London could never.

Saw these pics making the rounds on twitter over the recent heatwave. The Scottish are really bad at being nationalists. It's so strange they adopt a third worldist narrative about how they are currently colonised by England when they joined the union voluntarily after going bankrupt failing to colonise Panama. They never celebrate the countless Scottish inventors, explorers or writers (with the sole exception of Robert Burns) and completely deny the integral role Scots played in building the empire. Instead they do what people in t' norf do and focus on how rough hard knock their area is as if that's some sort of brag. This type of shit is exactly the same as Africans complaining about the Mercator projection that makes Africa look smaller as if that has any bearing on them whatsoever.

Scots are not nationalists they just want to be "different" TM. The Scots have benefited just as much if not more than the English from the Union. They like to pretend they are poor widdle oppressed celtiods like the Irish and Welsh (when with the former the Scots were the prime genocider of) in reality the entire Scottish nationalism is nothing more than a social game to try and gain prestige. The Scottish middle class pretends to be more "European" (whatever the fuck that means) and more enlightened than the English middle class. Forgetting that they come from a place that deep fries pizza and does heroin and meth like they are going out of style.

I have come around to Restore standing in Makerfield. The "splitting the vote" tactic is going to get used against them whatever they do and whatever happens
The whole idea that parties are "owed" votes and that therefore a party with slightly similar positions should deny the locals who want them any representation is stupid.

If Greens want to run against Labour, or Restore against Reform, so be it. Particularly in this election, where the result doesn't matter.

If Labour wins or loses, a turbo Fabian is in power until 2029 regardless.

And here's England and Wales imposed over Scotland:

And here's Australia imposed over both:

The implication of their post is that they think worth is determined by landmass. They have some of the most beautiful parts of the British Isles. They should be happy. If they hate the govt, well join everyone else in England and Wales.

Wonder if the Greens have already spotted the financial benefits of giving children of upper class Indians "MP" positions to give them easy right to remain in the country. Turns out another candidate was told to withdraw because of her student visa so clearly something about "Q" that made them overlook that.
MSP, it's only the Scots who've allowed it. Q (power word: Srivatsan) also seems to be bullshitting about getting a Global Talent so that may have been a factor, although supposedly there's already questions if he's breached the max working hours cap on his student visa.
There really needs to be a non alcoholic pimms, ‘cos I love pimms but don’t drink. Is there a non booze version?
Switch to Robinson's lemon, and add a splash of balsamic vinegar. Apparently it's the dog's wotsits.
Splash of balsamic vinegar, bit of tonic water and one of those non alcoholic gin substitutes, then just make Pimm's as normal. It sounds insane but does actually work. I know this because I never remember to pick up some Pimm's for when it's hot. Although I don't go for the non alcoholic gin.
I liked his take on the Michael Jackson biopic

Refute Scottish propaganda with population data - Scots HATE this one simple trick!
