This makes a ton of sense when you understand how culturally popular and chic the burger is in Japan (same story with South Korea). The YouTube Channel "Asian Boss" has a really interesting video covering burgers in South Korea. A lot of it has to do with the reconstruction in both countries coming out of WW2 and the Korean war respectively.
