Does anyone have a suggestion? I'm trying to get a connection with a budget open source device through a standard OBD2 CAN Hi CAN low and hitting the wall. The long term goal is reverse engineering process.

I'm mated one of these guys to a standard OB2 connector afaik I'm getting connection with proper drivers and getting no data connected via OBD2 to perfectly functional CAN bus vehicles.

ODB is intentionally obtuse and modern cars require the Mivec Mitsubishi scanner as they jsut made it even more obtuse. they WANTED to for you to take your car to the dealership to have brake jobs done as they were locking the cars down without that scanner tool. Hyundai caught soo much shit for that that they backed it off.

I posted a whole book on this in another car thread, so I will post it here too: https://ia600106.us.archive.org/17/items/the-car-hackers-handbook/The Car Hackers Handbook.pdf
You may find chapters 3, 4, and 5 useful.

Oh I'm aware of the book, it's good literature, ty. I'm hitting the wall somewhere between proper drivers, the baud rate communication being set wrong (set to 500K currently) , something beyond theory a book can assist with.

We're talking far far beyond scan tools here, raw CAN BUS data not to be confused with check engine codes or pre-written module pairing code.

OBD2 is a good way to find MOST CAN BUS communication, Daimler Chrysler and a few others have decided the ODB2 was far too easy to access certain modules pertaining to security and they have added barriers and such. Keep in mind we are not talking scan tools, I own 10 of them this about raw data in the form of Hex, and the retrieval/injection etc.
