Business Spirit Airlines shutting down after rescue talks collapse - No mo' flyin', neighba'.

L / A

Spirit Airlines is shutting down as a business after failing to secure a $500m (£368m) bailout from the Trump administration.

The budget airline was in talks with the US government about a rescue deal which would have saved it from collapse.

But discussions collapsed and the carrier said in an announcement on its website on Saturday that with "great disappointment" the airline had "started an orderly wind-down of our operations, effective immediately".

Spirit was emerging from its second bankruptcy filing in recent years before the US-Israel war in Iran, but the resulting surge in jet fuel costs pushed it over the brink.

All upcoming flights with Spirit have been cancelled, while those with tickets are not expected to be refunded as part of the winding down process.

Customers with outstanding tickets may be able to claim refunds via their credit card companies for flights which are not honoured.

Spirit's customer service is also no longer available, the airline said early on Saturday.
Fuel costs can make up as much as 40% of an airline's outgoings, and airlines have seen the cost of jet fuel double since the US and Israeli strikes began at the end of February.

Savanthi Syth, airlines analyst at the investment bank Raymond James, said spiralling jet fuel costs in the wake of the Iran war had proved "the final nail in the coffin" for Spirit.

Speaking to the BBC, Syth said the operator had shied away from the radical overhaul it needed during a 2024 bankruptcy procedure.

Spirit had been in the process of making the changes it needed in its current bankruptcy process, scaling back the number of flights it was offering and aircraft it owned, she said.
But its ability to survive the year was in question even before the Iran war, Syth added.

"If it wasn't for the fuel scenario, they would have been okay through the summer, beyond the summer I would have said it was still precarious."

Some have been cutting flights and others have hiked fares to cope with the cost increases. At the same time, the head of the International Energy Agency (IEA) has warned Europe could run out of jet fuel in as little as six weeks.

At the end of April, Spirit had been confident its rescue deal with the Trump administration was to be finalised imminently.

But after that deal fell through, Trump on Friday told BBC partner CBS the airline had been offered "a final proposal" to keep it in business.

The earlier plan, which would have seen the US government take effective ownership of as much as 90% of the airline, faced stiff opposition from Wall Street, Capitol Hill and even a member of Trump's own cabinet.

Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy told Reuters a rescue would amount to tossing "good money after bad".

Oh no, where will I go to have some negroid in pajama pants and a shower cap ruin my flying experience with rap at max volume with no headphones and then beat me to death when I ask them to turn it down?

One last 'fuck you' to all the customers, eh?

I’m going to be completely honest: I don’t think the lower classes should have the privilege of flying.
Just say niggers shouldn't be allowed to fly. A quiet respectful white man has every right to take a flight, regardless of economic status.

While very funny, I'm shuddering at the thought of having to share my flights with niggers who would've flown on Spirit. Sure they're usually going to Vegas and the Dominican Republic to twerk, but not exclusively.
I think we'll be fine if we stick to airlines that have big credit card deals. They don't want people with bad credit to fly on their planes. It will hurt conversion rates.

Maybe airlines should only let you on board if you’re dressed appropriately and behave yourself. If people don’t want to act like adults, they shouldn’t be treated like adults.

Think they’ll be more videos of niggers trying to fly with bottle rockets or is it gonna more chimp outs about racisms because Jiggerboo Airlines shut down
I dont think the average Spirit customer can put 1 and 1 together and actually figure out that not bailing out this airline is why they cant afford flights anymore.
Also its probably just a matter of time until someone else wants to get their hands on that sweet child support cash and make yet another airline in the spirit of Spirit.

One might hope that the industry would eventually learn, and start pricing and dress-coding former Spirit passengers out until they just get Greyhounds.
You still have Frontier Airlines, in the same league as Spirit. Now we won't have any Spirit passengers on YouTube copcams being arrested for acting like fucking animals. But Frontier passengers will take up the slack, I'm sure.

suprised they said "wind down" when they literally shut down overnight. its like you are easing into a pool when you are shoved directly into the pool.
probably makes more financial sense than hobbling on, still wild wording

There was a black couple eating an entire bucket of fried chicken across from me and no one was capable of speaking at a reasonable volume.
Now why would you just get on the internet and lie like that? They don't allow outside food & drink on their aircraft (largely because they want to sell you theirs). You'll get away with a soda or coffee but on dozens of routine, uneventful flights I've taken on Spirit over the past 10 years I've never once seen anybody allowed on board with their own food, and I've seen people try it.

Altima airlines, deadass!

I'm glad I got to experience Spirit once, just for the memories. I ever got the free in-flight entertainment of people brawling in the aisles. It really lived up to the hype.

Way back when, flew all the time in the acquisition job, would always take some chocolate bars in the briefcase, just in case. But that was when people, even in coach, got full free meals. When booking travel would always request a seafood meal, fresher and at no extra charge. On the bad side, planes still had smoking sections then, but overall the flying experience then was a quantum leap better than now. Unless you are flying first class these days flying the airlines is little different than riding a Greyhound bus, as we all have seen, ad infinitum, ad nauseum.

Who could have predicted the airline industry would punish us so fucking hard for laughing at Seinfeld's "what's the deal with airline food?" jokes? I still feel like the airline catering industry hates its end-users (not strictly the "customers" -- the airlines -- but rather the cattle the airlines feed their product to) almost as much as the video games industry hates gamers or the mainstream entertainment industry (i.e. Hollywood) hates its audience.
