You may hate spirit, but you're going to hate what happens to ticket prices even more. Expect 20-30% increased ticket prices over summer. Also all the spirit customers that can even afford to fly, will now flood other airlines.
Yup. When the cost of fuel goes up, everything does. I wish so badly that we had invested more in nuclear energy rather than other nations having us over a barrel ba dum tss 🥁

That's the thing. I actually own my 03 Malibu. I paid cash. Its a 3.1L V6, gets like 18 city, 20 or 22 highway. But its durable, and repairable. I didn't need no lease to buy it. That engine will outlast the frame its packed into if i take care of it. Meanwhile these 4 cylinder turbos are just begging for trouble, they are running so fucking hard. Sure you might save gas. But when they pop, there goes your engine nigger.

You expect trucks and planes to move around with nuclear reactors or something? I guess electric cars are a thing, but if you think everyone would shift to electric cars, then the entire electric grid would need to be upgraded. Which is a 20+ year project. Never mind the obviously added reactors etc to keep up with the demand.

Oh also the US can in theory meet gas demand with domestic production, but it's more profitable for our companies to export our (relatively cheaper) gas to Europe and Asia and sell it for more expensive as they can't meet demand themselves, and the Middle East can't ship to them.

It's one of the least-significant expenses in the average family budget
The price of fuel affects almost everything. Transport of goods - deliveries. Heating. Industrial processes. Growing food, packing and shipping food. Fuel and energy prices affect all of it.
Here our fuel prices are over double what the are in the UK, and entire industries have been decimated all the way over Europe by the cost of energy. Filling the car up for commuting is only one small aspect of it.

Yeah I’ll just admit a lot of this is out of my league lol. However I have one crazy take that I think could work: if oil is so important, don’t leave it up to private interests who can price gouge. Nationalize some oil drilling and just go crazy. Within environmentally friendly parameters of course, nothing reckless like the Soviet onion did.

(A country that didn’t care about human life certainly wouldn’t care about nature, like China today. I think a lot can be said about a country through its environmental policy.)

The biggest price gougers of oil ARE nationalized oil companies.

Alright I’m just gonna shut up now

Yeah that's not going to work when you expect the private interests to fund 10-20 year long projects in Venezuela, upgrading the infrastructure there and taking all the risk etc etc. Especially when they've been fucked over by doing exactly that in the past w/ Chavez and the US government basically told them "tough luck" back then.

That's without mentioning of course that different governments would have radically different approaches to oil, making any long-term government planning basically impossible. Just think of the whiplash any US government approach to oil would take between Trump 1.0, Biden, and Trump 2.0, when those industries work with a horizon worth decades.

Your faulty assumption was that the state (or leaders/politicians) are benevolent or act in the public's best interest.

Democracy is a lie (at least the germans are kind of honest about it by rebranding as "militant/defensive democracy"), and populism got co-opted as a bad thing.

Part of the problem is there are different types of Oil and the kind of Oil the US has is not the kind the US can refine.

Now why don't we build refineries that can handle the type of Oil we drill? well ask the Hippy Generation that has done nothing to solve any problems since the 1970s when they got in power and refuse to let go of any sliver of power unless it is pried from their cold dead hands.

Populism is one of the most extreme versions of democracy. It's literally playing to the commoners' demands for votes (honestly or dishonestly is besides the point).
It seems to work very well in practice when you look at the countries that are closest to it (e. g. Switzerland has managed to stay out of the EU).

Switzerland has managed to stay out of the EU
Switzerland is a country of less than 10 million, mostly high educated individuals, with extremely strong fiscal discipline. In the US (and most countries let's be realistic) most people don't even know what they're voting for half the time.

Agreed, of course, there's nuance. I was talking about energy production, not really gas for cars.

They are pretty average compared to european peers (like netherlands and france) wrt. education, and the fiscal discipline comes from the semi-direct "populistic" democracy you're complaining about.

The fiscal discipline comes from their constitution, everything else is secondary. In the US that could never work, and you can see it as just about most of the country asks for more money and less taxes. I'm all for less taxes, but then you gotta kill social security, medicare/medicaid, welfare, gut federal jobs, the military, stop subsidizing farmers etc etc etc.

Do you think you can achieve even one of the above if you let people vote directly?

And that's without getting in the fact that the US is first and foremost a republic where power does not lie so much on federal, but rather on state governments. And considering that most states are at this point solidly blue or red, you could say you have an effective direct democracy system on the state and local level already.

The Gas is the one that directly affects people in terms of Food and uh..Gas.
Yes, I was largely replying to the person saying we should do nuclear, in that message.

We do have quite a number of oil burning power plants which could be mothballed in favor of nuclear.
