You can mix and match everything on a framework 13 pro with a framework 13 except the battery as it needed a bigger chassi. You can take the display, mainboard, keyboard, ... of the pro put on the normal and vice-versa

TBH this is more a limitation of AMD and Intel as they don't sell and let you use/mod sockets on mobile CPU's or I would imagine that framework and some other companies would do too.

This doesn't even work on desktops since AMD and Intel change up sockets more often than every 10 years.

It's just a matter of stating the obvious, that buying a laptop with the idea that you're just going to slap a newer and better CPU into it years later is a waste of time when that doesn't even apply to desktops after 4-5 years.

Hell, I can't even buy a framework 13 pro right now because it's on fucking preorder shipping supposedly July for AMD and August for Intel. And then their regular laptop 13 series at least for Intel is a generation behind what I can buy from Lenovo in stock right now. ooh, I get to pick if I want an extra USB-C port or an HDMI port, whoopdeedoo, if I need HDMI I can just use a USB-C port replicator.

edit: A framework laptop 13, with an intel ultra 7 155h, and only 16GB RAM 512GB SSD because that's not customizable(wtf?) is $1400. I can get a thinkpad t14s with an ultra 7 258, 32GB RAM and 1TB SSD for $2200 with a 1 year on site warranty. If I DIY the framework laptop 13 to get that same ultra 7 155h, 32GB RAM, 1TB SSD, 2 USB-C 1 USB-C, 1 HDMI, the only display option available(so much for customizability on these things), the fucking power adapter, and no windows license to save $140/$200, that's still $2130. So for $70 less than the lenovo I'm still getting a last gen CPU, and not getting an on-site warranty.

wtf is the point of this company? You'd never buy this product for a business, and even self-employed still shouldn't buy it. It doesn't make sense from a performance perspective. The DIY novelty is hilarious because again... no upgradeability years later. Half of the options aren't even really options like what, you're just not going to buy a keyboard and display because you were going to run this headless anyway? Go buy some micro PC from lenovo/HP/dell etc then and it'll take up even less of a footprint than a laptop. This is a solution looking for a problem.

Threadripper is pretty specialized and most normal consumers aren't going to mess with it. If you strip out those, you're left with AM4 and AM5. AMD use to be the one that was bad about constantly changing sockets way back with AM2/AM3 because early on, they moved the memory management directly on-chip. Meanwhile Intel had several generations of chips all on LGA 775 since most of the memory management was on the board/chipset.

It's almost entirely reversed now. AMD kept AM4 going way longer than anyone though, even releasing newer chips well into the AM5 lifespan. Nearly any AM4 board can run any AM4 chip, so long as you have an older CPU to install the BIOS update. I've gotten multiple old boards running on newer CPUs in my homelab. Meanwhile I've got an older board with a 9th gen Intel that has zero upgrade path (I think the socket only had two generations on it).

I doubt we'll see soldered on CPUs for desktops in the future. Desktops are such a specialized/enthusiast market anyway that people would scream about it. There's even a newer memory standard (CAMM2) for DDR6, if RAM prices ever stop being retarded enough for it to be developed/released.

You've missed the entire point. The point is that you cannot expect these laptops to be upgradeable for a decade or whatever, if you can't even do that with desktops. There's a reason I mentioned sockets from 2016 forward. LGA 775? No, Intel didn't even keep that around for a decade either. It was released in 2004 and replaced in 2008. By the time Sandy Bridge was out in 2011 using LGA 1155, no one was buying new old stock to upgrade old core2duo CPUs to core2quad outside of some weird home lab setup, and surely no one was doing this in a professional environment. But thanks for bringing up LGA 775 so I could point out it was an issue going back a decade further.

The problem with those things is that they come with real costs and consequences. Jake has only been doing content creation for 6 months so he has no savings, youtube is a voltoaile mistress. She was an artist and a designer who created the art, measurements and production instructions for their shirts, pants, etc. She also designed some of the random stickers and whatnot. Yeah I don't get it either, clearly there's some fans but everything said about these laptops makes no sense.
