US Virginia passes redistricting measure that could help Democrats retake the House - Republicans lose another 4 seats in Trump's redistricting war

RICHMOND — Virginia voters approved a referendum to draw new congressional districts that could add as many as four Democratic seats to the House of Representatives, the Associated Press projects, awarding Democrats an advantage in the national redistricting war begun by Republicans.

Democrats and their allies poured at least $64 million into the Virginia campaign in a high-stakes bid to counter President Donald Trump’s push to add Republican seats in other states. Voters rewarded the effort, continuing momentum Democrats built with big wins in Virginia’s statewide elections last fall.

The Associated Press estimates that 3 million Virginians cast ballots, or 48 percent of registered voters, compared with 55 percent of voters in last year’s gubernatorial election.

Early voting began March 6 and nearly 1.37 million early ballots had been cast as of Saturday, according to state figures, compared with about 1.5 million early votes in the 2025 election.

At least $93 million — most of it in untraceable “dark money” — financed the contest, with supporters of the measure outspending opponents. National Democrats view the state as the biggest prize still available in the national redistricting arms race ahead of this fall’s midterm congressional elections.Ask The Post AIDive deeper
Trump sparked the costly effort last year by pushing Republican-led states to create more GOP-leaning districts to help his party maintain its thin majority in the House. Texas, North Carolina, Ohio and Missouri responded, and then Democrats counterpunched by passing a referendum to create five new blue-leaning districts in California.

Virginia’s 11 House seats are held by six Democrats and five Republicans, but if voters approved the referendum, Democrats promised to implement a map that gives them an advantage in 10 districts. Five of them would be anchored in deep-blue Northern Virginia and stretch into rural parts of the state. At least two of the new blue districts — one in Hampton Roads and one in the Shenandoah region — would still be close, based on recent election results.Ask The Post AIDive deeper
The new map faces another hurdle before it becomes reality. The Supreme Court of Virginia is scheduled this week to hear legal challenges to the referendum if it passed.

If Democrats were able to pick up four extra seats in Virginia, it would give the party a slight edge over Republicans in the national battle for control of the House — though redistricting efforts in Florida and other Southern states could yet change the math.
Many voters who showed up at the polls early Tuesday said they found the onslaught of ads on the measure confusing and overwhelming.

Erin Frank, a 38-year-old physician assistant who described herself as a moderate Democrat, read an online sample of Virginia’s redistricting measure repeatedly on Monday night to figure out what it would actually change in her state.
She voted for it on Tuesday in Alexandria because it would give the Democratic Party a leg up. “If other states aren’t going to play by the rules, we have to have the option to redistrict so that we can have more seats on our side,” she said. “It just gives us an upper hand, and we need that right now.”

But Julian Burke, a 79-year-old Republican, voted against the measure from the same Alexandria precinct, saying that redistricting would further skew the state’s maps — which already have deep-blue areas such as in Northern Virginia — outside of the normal process, which relies on the census and an independent commission.
“It would’ve made Virginia lopsided all the way through 2030, and the Democrats have crazy policies,” he said. “Absolutely nuts.”

The vote-yes campaign in Virginia has raised far more money than its more fragmented opposition. Virginians for Fair Elections, which supports redistricting, reported raising $64 million as of a campaign finance deadline last week. About $40 million of that was contributed by House Majority Forward, a political nonprofit supporting House Democrats and led by House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-New York). The group is not required to report individual donors.

“We’re urging everyone to vote yes to stop the MAGA power grab,” Jeffries said Monday during a news conference. He and Virginia’s top Democrats, who control the state legislature, have held rallies around the state in recent weeks, and former president Barack Obama has appeared in several vote-yes advertisements. Gov. Abigail Spanberger (D) has also endorsed the campaign, but has not been as gung-ho in support as California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) was in that state. She initially argued that Democrats could pick up seats without redrawing the maps.
The vote-no campaign has been led by several smaller groups in different parts of the state. Virginians for Fair Maps, the best-funded, is led by former state attorney general Jason S. Miyares and had raised about $19 million as of the most recent deadline. It has not yet been required to disclose any of its donors.

Former governor Glenn Youngkin (R) has joined Miyares for a handful of public vote-no events, while Trump and House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-Louisiana) held a telephone rally for Monday night.
The referendum asks voters whether to amend the Virginia Constitution to temporarily allow partisan redistricting; the state would revert to its existing bipartisan redistricting commission in 2030. The General Assembly preapproved the new map so it would take effect in time to hold primaries Aug. 4 if the measure is approved.

I'm not sure about that. I've heard blue states justify gerrymandering by saying red states did it first for over a decade now. It can't be both started by Trump in 2026, and also started by republicans in 2020, but also started in 2012 by republicans. Even as recent as 2017, I heard republicans justify gerrymandering by saying it's in retaliation to gerrymandering by democrats (especially California). In 4 years red states will probably be doing it again and almost certainly saying that they have to because blue states did it 2026.

The date when someone committed the original sin of gerrymandering keeps getting pushed forward and people are way too quick to pick one specific day on a century long back and forth as the start of some conflict to justify future action.
Yes, both sides gerrymander, but they only do it every ten years on a specific schedule. It wasn't supposed to happen until 2030.

But Trump basically forced the Texas Republicans to redistrict their already GOP gerrymandered maps they made in 2020.

Genuinely this is not an opinion on Trump, like it is genuinely factual. The only reason Virginia and California redrew their maps was because Texas did. In fact California leaders literally came out and said if Texas stopped their redistricting, California would halt all attempts to redistrict.

I'm sorry but this current mid-decade redistricting war was objectively and factually started by trump. He's a retard who keeps stepping on rakes and hurting his entire party.

I'd suggest doing some research on the topic before writing an objectively wrong wall of text.

Louisiana got fucked out of a seat and Maryland already redistricted. This "Trump started this" is just not true.
Maryland has not redistricted since 2021 (when every other state did so too).

Maryland only PROPOSED redistricting earlier this year ONLY AFTER Texas put their own redistricting into motion.

The Maryland house passed the plan but the Senate has refused to vote on it so far.

You are just objectively wrong here. You're saying something happened, that literally hasn't happened l.

Bullshit.

No way the DNC would stop their power grab if Texas didn't go through with the redistricting. And fyi, Texas has the more fair redistrict map in comparison to Cali!!!

The mid decade redistricting came about because the Biden WH screwed States over in the final Census count.

No way the DNC would stop their power grab if Texas didn't go through with the redistricting.
If they did, then the GOP gave the DNC the perfect excuse for redistricting by doing it first. Now the Democrats can frame it as a response to a panicking GOP desperate to hold onto power for their loss in the midterms.

Why is every district now snaking into San Fran county? Fuck you, that's why
Not defending California's redistricting (worse swing, and more against the 'compact of regions' kind of republican democracy that defined the country), but pro-left gerrymandering will always look more blatant on a map, because it's their base that clusters into a few geographically-constrained megacities. More natural, regional borders and recognizing dense urban centers have different needs from the hinterland if you want the politician to truly represent their constituents favors Republicans by default.

It's why when this whole resurgence of the Gerrymandering war kicked off with Texas' announcement that they would redraw district borders, Democrats freaked out so hard and tried to paint them as the next Hitler for doing it. Because they only, really, have a few states left to gerrymander in response. They've already been doing it for decades. It's how they got control of so many states to begin with. In fact, I'm pretty sure almost all of the successful lawsuits for a district being too gerrymandered and needing to be redrawn were Illinois/Maryland fucking around or a Southern Red state drawing preposterous borders because their Democrats claimed not having a blue seat be majority black in the state violated the Civil Rights act or something.

if you read any news article about the Texas redistricting a few months ago it probably would have mentioned that gerrymandering possibilities are going to be slim for Democrats because their states are already so heavily gerrymandered

That's literally impossible.
Furthering that, even with the algorithmically-generated district lines some anti-gerrymandering activists have proposed, a) they still draw lines that make sense in a vacuum, not at all for the local political dynamics, b) they have a hard time complying with previous orders given by local courts, and, most importantly, c) it just moves the problem one rung higher up the ladder and politicos start warring over the particulars of the algorithm instead of over the borders.
Welcome to region-based political representation. Like most aspects of American democracy, it has flaws that are frustrating, but also all of the proposed alternatives are manifestly worse

Commieformia maps are more unfair before and after than the final Texas map.

Commiefornia and Texas are roughly equal proportion minority Repub and Dem of 40%. But Commiefornia was already disenfranchising its Republicans more than the Texas will its Democrats if the redistricting goes through.

Texas is moving from 34-21% Dem seating with a 42% Dem supporting population while California is moving from 17%-8% with a 38% Republican supporting population

21/42 = Texas Democrats count as half of what they should in a truly representational system after redistricting

17/38 = California Republicans already counted as 44% of what they should before Texas supposedly started the redistricting war, and now they want to make each Republican vote count less than 1/4th of what it should be as a 'lenient justified response'. 92/62 = 1.48, 8/32 = 0.21, 1.48/0.21 = means a California Republican has 1/7th the say of a Dem in their so called democracy.

Typical 'heads I win tails you lose' leftist gaslighting that only complete morons (unfortunately a sizable chunk of the US population) would fall for..

You don't understand what I'm actually talking about. My entire point in this:

States only redistrict every 10 years and after a U.S. Census. Not a single state was discussing redistricting before the scheduled one in 2030, until Donald Trump told Texas (GOP controls both houses and the Governor's Mansion) to redistrict EARLY. Now we are seeing multiple other states follow suit.

TLDR: If President Trump did not get involved and tell Texas to redistrict, no other states would have redistricted until as scheduled in 2030.

And the kicker? Texas was already gerrymandered for Republicans during the most recent scheduled redistricting!
The GOP held two thirds of all the congressional seats for Texas despite only getting 56% of the vote in 2024.

Yes, obviously both sides gerrymander. The existing maps in many of these red states already gave the Republicans an edge! In fact, in literally every election that we've used these maps (2022 and 2024) the Republicans easily won control of the House!
Instead of choosing to actually enact policies people want and fulfill his campaign promises in order to increase his odds of winning in the midterms, Trump decided to try and gerrymander a bunch of already gerrymandered (by the GOP) states 4 years earlier than planned and THAT is the only reason why all the blue states redistricted.

You're speaking out of both sides of your mouth, admitting that both sides gerrymander and then acting like the Republicans struck the completely innocent Dumbocrats.

You act like Dumbocrats didn't pursue redistricting out of the kindness of their hearts when in reality they are already gerrymandered up the hilt and it is far from certain where battle would land as up until recently most sources operating from a pure analysis of preexisting gerrymandering landscape predicted a Republican edge, I guess underestimating the shenanigans the Dems could pull.

Trump on the other hand had little to lose since midterms are usually a bloodbath for the party in power.

@grump

You still don't understand- I'm not even arguing for one side of the other.

I'm just pointing out it's objectively a true fact that none of these states would have tried to redistrict before 2030, as scheduled, if it wasn't for Trump and Texas.

And now the Dems might possibly gain more seats at the end of this redistricting war, that trump started.

Im not taking sides, I just think it's so fucking funny that our President started all this for no good reason, and now his entire party is worse off for him.
This is Kiwi Farms and I'm laughing at him just like any other lolcow

Most predictions said the House was probably going to flip beforehand. Assuming Trump's team reached the same conclusions, it could be completely logical from Trump's own pov to make an attempt...even a very uncertain one, to make up for the Dem's longstanding advantage in gerrymandering. He could either throw the dice and possibly lose or do nothing and lose. We might as well laugh at you if you got your house stolen and took a coinflip that was the only option you had to get it back.
