Zoomer Kiwi Central / Serious Gen Z Discussion - A place for Zoomers to have a discussion about the Gen Z and their future

Anyone else just switched off from the world?
I find it really difficult to detach, as much as I want to. People suggest you "touch grass", yet touching grass involves talking to people who are fully locked in to the world. You try making friends with fellow zoomers and you have to wade through a forest of FREE PALESTINE advocates and various flavours of genderqueers. You try talking to older family members and they tend to be just as politicsbrained as anyone else, just in a different fashion.

You really can't switch off unless you go full Kaczynski. This insufferable culture is not exclusive to the internet, it is baked into every aspect of modern life. And people ask me why I'm so pessimistic. There's no escape at all, that's why.

I've been living mostly in my own head for the past half a year and life's never been better. :)
Maladaptive daydreaming is both a blessing and a curse.

You can create infinite realities and stories inside your own head with fictional characters or people you know. You will never be bored and will care way less about other's opinions because you don't need them for socializing. But you will get addicted to it, and it will damage your ability to do school or work and may cause you to be slightly schizo if you have neurotic tendecies.

Story of my life...

I've decided to delete TikTok. Not necessarily because of productivity or brainrot, but because it's weighing down on my psyche. My feed is full of local crime news, thinkpieces on why I'm responsible for the patriarchy, and hate. Chapell Roan is going through it right now, even though I dislike her I realise how petty and unfair it is. You don't realise it but over time it lowers your mood.
At this point, I am almost certain that short-form media is a psyop designed to traumatize and brainwash politically minded normies into compliance, and to keep the turbo normies lulled into a deeper sleep. If you get rid of that shit you’re cleaning out your brain so good for you.

As for the rest of your post: you’re not choosing ignorance or hiding your head in the sand because you’ve chosen to disconnect from social media and the nonstop torrent of bad news. Bear in mind that this level of connectivity did not exist 20 years ago. All of this shit is going to happen regardless of whether you know about it or not, and chances are you’re not in a position to change the course of events even if you do know what’s going on.

Anyone else just switched off from the world?

The vast majority of the news I read is negative. Fuel prices increasing, man shot dead, politician outed as a pedophile... why do I need to know this? Why is it that whenever something horrible happens, it has to be broadcast to me? What do you want me to do about it?

Also, I've been working on becoming a more critical thinker and I've realised just how flawed many of the arguments you see in the media are, and how much the news exploits your cognitive biases. Yes, I am choosing to be ignorant, but maybe that's for the best. I'd rather eat nothing than eat shit. And of course, I can get my information from better sources.

I won't deny though, some part of me likes hearing these horrible things. Whenever something "happens" it's like a new episode of my favourite TV show drops. This current Iran shit is pretty entertaining (or it was before fuel went up). I suspect most people have the same attitude towards the news.
It's probably not a bad idea to detach from social media. You're not wrong about news outlets focusing on the negative either, there have been quite a few studies on the matter. If it bleeds, it leads and they know what they're doing.

Unless you're autistic about the news sources and only get them from verified niche sites that you follow because you like them or because they're reliable, its all engagement farming.

For example, I only follow some specific OSINT accounts and other non-mainstream networks for the Iran war on X, otherwise the coverage would be useless and unreadable since much of the noise is from Israel spergs, browns, panicians and doomers.

I refuse to believe that the (late) 1990s (‘97-‘99) and even the (early) 2010s (‘10-‘12) are zoomer (at least not purely). Let alone zillennial & zalpha. PURE zoomer = 2000s
I maintain that there are three basic sub-categories of zoomers:

Early zoomers, who graduated high school before Covid and in some ways resemble late millenials (born 1997-2001)

Core zoomers, who went thru Covid while in middle/High school (borm 2002-2008))

Late zoomers, who weren't affected much by Covid and frankly have more in common with Gen Alpha (2009-2012)

I don't think Covid was specifically the reason (or only reason) why the sub-categories exist, but it seems like an accurate reference point for the category divides.
1995-1999
Barely a zoomer, more in common with millennials and you fit best as a zillennial. You barley remembered the ‘90s but you had a complete 2000s childhood
2000-2002
Pure zoomer but you have some in common with millennials. You had most 2000s-full 2010s childhood
2003-2007
Pure zoomer (no expectations). You had some 2000s and a full 2010s childhood
2008-2009
Pure zoomer but you have some in common with Gen Alpha. You experience most of the 2010s when you were a kid but still faced covid during late-elementary to middle school
2010-2015
Barley a zoomer, more in common with Gen Alpha and you fit best as a zalpha. Experienced only some of the 2010s but covid only ended during elementary or first year of middle school

Question to anybody who'd know, what is considered ideal pay as a zoomer these days?
I remember around 2015-16 most teens with no experience could only hope for $12-$15/hr on the high end, and the idea of getting hooked up by a family member or getting lucky was maybe $20/hr, but that was exceedingly rare.

Yea, I always hated hearing people around my age claim to be a "90's baby" since virtually nobody in our age range would have had any notable memories or experiences from the 90's.
It's weird to think back to my early childhood watching movies on VHS, having dial-up internet, mostly playing outside, to in my teenage years having instagram and snapchat, youtubes a huge thing by then, most people my age being online, and just being in a completely different world.

"Gen Z spends almost 85% less on drinking than prior generations They are also now more likely to be out of the job market, single, and have no sex What is going on?"

edit: just realize some zoomers are not even 21 yet. But still, that is a breathtaking crash.

I'm reminded of a statistic that might be misleading or bogus that most of the booze is consumed by the top fifth of drinkers. IE Alkies. I wonder if there are less zoomer alkies or just less zoomer casual drinkers.

TLDR: Gen Z socialise less often, so we drink less (because it's a social activity, at least in the West).

I think it's (at least in part), the latter. I've heard some people say that because the whole goddamn internet le phone bad shit, we zoomers have to be extra vigilant about what we say, lest one of us ends up as the next lolcow.

I don't think that's 100% of the picture however. I feel it may also be because Gen Z was the first generation to grow up with access to the Internet; and thus, the ability to communicate with people across the world. I feel zoomers speak more to people online than in real life, and you don't exactly drink over the phone, do you?

People say this, but young people, i.e. the people who would be recording that type of stuff to cancel someone have been glued to their phones/terminally online for over a decade at this point.
I think things might just be different now because the social Rubicon has shifted and theoretically anybody can expose someone/be exposed.

Back when I was a teen in school if someone was a loser it didn't matter what race, gender, or sexuality they were, they weren't exposing anybody because everyone knew they were a loser and nobody cared about them and their opinions on other people meant nothing.
It's crazy to think today though that a popular jock could call some loser a faggot and somehow experience social consequences over it.

Personally I fall into the camp of believing, losers are losers for a reason, and it's usually because they are maladaptive socially or have anti-social behaviors, so I don't think giving power to those types of people is a good idea.

I'd say that's a pretty good take. Society, naturally, removes those that will end up stirring the pot. Then, they'll whine about "muh society" all the time. It's funny, actually.

It's actually been observed in multiple revolutions, in different time periods, by separate people, that the leaders of revolutions and/or those most committed to it are dysgenic.

People who witnessed the French Revolution commented that many of the leading figures were themselves physically weak and/or had bodily and facial deformities. Cromwell's revolution was mainly spearheaded by 17th century antisocial losers, who used their religious sect as an excuse to ban holidays, sports, and games because they hated the idea of other people having fun or being more socially popular than them. The Russian revolution was led by (literal) proto-SJWs, who were turbo-academics, social outsiders, physically weak, and were in part motivated by personal resentment of anyone with money or social status.

The American Revolution was sort of an exception, as it wasn't really a revolution, but a war of secession led by wealthy landowners. The overall point still stands though, people who want to overthrow a society are usually the dregs of that society.

Interesting.

It makes sense.
Being kicked out of society leads to wanting to replace it. So you can have at least something under a new order.

Rosa Luxemburg (Germany) had one leg shorter, so she couldn't run away from her fate. Stalin had one arm shorter and paralyzed.

I want to cope about dinnergoth culture, which is the de-facto zoomer culture.

If you are lucky enough to not know what dinnergoth means, is the made up term for quirky, terminally online zoomers who can be described with fandom tags. Almost without exception, every zoomer there is can be described with this label because it is so diffuse but the cluster of aesthetics and personality traits is strong enough that they can be understood as a culture.

Let's face it, we aren't meeting each other irl. Most of us get on Discord where the dinnergoth and the chud duke it out. If you aren't one, you are the other and you don't get a say on the matter. I hate this tbqh. The fact that that you can't join any community these days and not be forced into fitting in with either the moids that talk about TFD while thirsting on VC or be one of the spergs that can only speak in references to anime and streamers. Every guy is a perv and every gal a whore. It's all just so tiresome.

I want to be more positive but it feels that every time I am nice to someone they just suck. Why would any of us want to meet strangers when the ones most similar to us are so disappointing?
