Some of his stuff is funny but to understand his popularity maybe it has to do with the period he was making jokes in like with Gallagher (the guy who made a career off of smashing watermelons with a mallet) and Bill Saluga (the "Ray J. Johnson" joke comedian). Carlin's "seven dirty word" routines from the 1970s certainly seems extremely tame by modern America's standards as the country has gone through decades of desensitization regarding displays of vulgarity, profanity and promiscuity in media since then.
I'm not so sure about that. He died at a time when everyone in his camp was very "speak truth to power" because that "power" was W and the Republicans. A lot of those people fell in line after Obama got in, and those that didn't closed ranks once Trump go in. It really depends on how much Obama would manage to piss him off. If he gets too pissed off, he becomes a seething pariah, hated by both sides. But I think it would be more likely he closes ranks and falls out of relevancy. I think he goes the route of Jon Stewart, but without the capability to start a podcast to remain in the public sphere (of course this is discounting that he'd be almost 90, and unless he has insane vitality, would probably just be a slovenly hermit who probably barely posts online).
What was interesting about Carlin is he initially supported Hillary Clinton, but then took an interest in Obama because Obama was the first real black contender in American politics. However, Carlin died before the 2008 election, so we'll never really know. That said, I wonder if he would have seen a lot of Dubya in Obama with the continuation of the Iraq and Afghanistan Wars, the drone program, the surveillance programs, and so on.
