My view on this war is it was going to happen sooner or later anyway, Iran was set on erasing Israel from existence and were well on their way to a functional nuke, those are facts not opinions. Leaving it to fester would make matters much worse. But neither do I think Trump and Netanyahu are playing 4D chess and it's all going to plan. I don't think they were expecting Iran to hold on this long, I think they put too much faith in the population to help on the ground, and I certainly don't think they fully thought through the level of disruption that would have been caused in the strait.
My reasoning on that last point is the US produces a huge amount of oil and could easily extract more, not to mention they now have control over Venezuelan crude. If they were expecting this much trouble, talks of demand destruction and a tanking of the world economy that the US will not be immune from, waiting a couple more years could have been smarter. The strait would still be fucked, but the US could have cushioned the blow to energy supplies by becoming a huge stable exporter, maybe even displacing some of the gulf for good even if the strait weren't under threat. Europe for sure, they can piss and moan all they want but it's buy crude from Russia (not happening), gulf (can't), or swallow some pride and buy all American.
Hindsight I know, and all indications are Israel were going to attack Iran either way. Israel have nukes, if they started losing badly enough I think there would be a nuclear exchange because why wouldn't they? If things are fucked now then I can only imagine what it would be like if nukes start flying.

I keep hearing this over and over that they expected the Iranian people to rise up, but the Iranian people instead rallied around the flag and did not rise up.
This is factually wrong, because ever since the start of the conflict, Trump, Bibi and even CENTCOM's commander (in an interview with Iran Intl.) have been asking Iranians to stay home and wait for the final call to get to the streets. As a result, the main opposition figure, which is Pahlavi, has not yet asked the people to rise up.
So let's not pin this on the people alone.
The amount of absolute FUBAR the IRGC is willing to go through before surrendering/accepting a ceasefire is absolutely bottomless; you should just look at how the Iran-Iraq war went.
