Submitted for your approval, dear Kiwis, the Montana Plan:
The Transparent Election Initiative, a bipartisan group based out of Helena, Montana, is pushing to functionally overturn the Citizens United ruling via ballot initiatives on the state level. Purportedly, the Citizens United ruling grants free speech (in the form of donations) to corporations that have been granted the power to donate to political campaigns, so therefore the goal of the Montana Plan is to regulate the powers that are given to corporations to donate on a state by state basis. The Montana Plan has yet to get on the ballot in its home state, and is currently campaigning for signatures, of which it claims to require over 100,000. TEI is organizing ballot initiatives and/or pushing for legislation in 17 different states, but their primary focus is in Montana, where they hope to pass their measure, which they say will inspire other states to follow suit.
The group claims that their measure has the support of 75% of Americans, and that it is a necessary reform to strengthen American democracy against corruption, dark money, and influence peddling, which, according to them, has only increased in the past 18 years. Listed below are two of their websites, one for the organization itself, the other for the state plan, decide for yourself if they have a worthy cause.
