For some odd reason the USSR struggled with that, though. Best they could ever manage was rough and useless one-ply gas station TP. If you could get more than one use out of it they would have been smuggling in American triple-ply next to the Levi's jeans.
During one of their throwdowns (I think during the Lebanon War in 1982, probably Mole Cricket 19) Israel had an F-15 got nailed by an air-to-air missile but it successfully made it back to base in a repairable state despite taking some nasty damage to the tail and one of the engines. There was also the time an Israeli F-15 had a mid-air collision with an A-4 Skyhawk during a training exercise, lost most of its right wing, and made it back to the airfield and was fixed up and put back into service.
The USA has always built its planes tough. Turns out that if you want a plane to be able to push up to 8 or 9gs sustained without risking structural damage you need a pretty fucking robust structure.

What's funny is "Greater Israel" has already come about thanks to the shit storm Hamas kicked off. Israel has Mount Herman and the rest of the Golan Heights, the Palestinians have never been more buck broken, Hezbollah can barely fire off a bottle rocket and now Iran is getting its shit kicked in. Israel is on the cusp of achieving so many maximalist objectives its unreal.

I have a pretty moderate knowledge of the F-35, that's about as specific as I'm willing to get on that. It's not a magical machine it simply uses clever design and a low observable coating to make it extremely difficult to detect by radar. Based on the fact that it exists it's pretty clear that whatever they used to target this munition was imperfect and it exploded short of the airframe and either caused some damage with shrapnel or it might even be simpler then that and after such a close call they grounded it out of an abundance of caution.
The projections for this conflict likely had us losing a dozen jets which would still have been a huge improvement from the gulf war and a bigger improvement from earlier conflicts. I have no idea. I just got off work but the real question if this is a serbia situation. For the unfamiliar in the late 90s Serbia shot down an F-117 stealth bomber with extremely antiquated equipment. How? The F-117 was taking off at nearly the exact same time every day and flying a near identical flight path. They used a broad spectrum radar looking for any fluctuations as well as spotters for the takeoff and the historical flight patterns. TLDR: Complacency.
The smartest people in this field who know infinitely more then me and have full access to way more data are currently sitting in a room or at least on a zoom call and figuring out how this happened, and the best next steps on preventing it going forward. That doesn't mean they will prevent it but these are very smart people and this is what they do. If this was complacency this is a huge wakeup call for everyone involved.
If this is some cool Iranian (Chinese) super weapon then I guess jets will start falling out of the sky. I have my doubts on that one but war is hell. I think that's pretty unlikely and however many they have is what they have because it's not like they can accept missile shipments from China with the current situation. I think this is more of a every dog has it's day type statistical outlier where someone got pretty lucky likely with an overlap of complacency from air dominance.

Its always something boring. As was stated earlier, stealth aircraft are invisible or hard to track with Radar, but the Mk 1 Eyeball can see them just fine, and so can thermal seeking missiles. The way stealth bombers defeat these things is by coming in at night and being painted black. The reason they are painted black is not because black has some inherent technological value. The radar defeating paint can be any color we want it to be. The black paint is entirely to defeat the Mk 1 Eyeball at night. Because if the Mk 1 Eyeball sees the aircraft, they can fire off a thermal seeker at it. And thermal seekers are a major pain in the ass because its very hard to hide heat signatures from a jet aircraft.

Why would you need Grindr for homo sex when you're in the army ?
Fucking stupid that this stuff still happens in 2026, when pretty much every military AFAIK has recognized this issue and briefed people on it.
I'm not sure how widely spread this practice is, but I've heard from some Finnish professional soldiers that they collect all the conscript phones before an exercise, and if the situation permits, they will get them periodically to have time with them like 30min per day etc. Because it's of course nice for the conscripts to be able to talk to their loved ones etc, but it's also to train and instil the habit of being without a phone, when that phone is a very real OPSEC risk in today's environment.

The F-35 isn't far behind the F-15 since that one engine it has cranks out 28,000 pounds of thrust. Its an upgraded version of the F-22's engine, and those only put out 26,000 pounds, but fortunately it has two of them, for a total of 52,000 pounds of thrust without even needing to afterburn. The Strike Eagle only gets at best 35,600 unless you feel like kicking in the afterburner.
And people wonder why we keep the poor thing chained up.
