The issue with doomposters in this thread always try to get the one up on you, at the beginning of this people were saying "well we are running out of ammo and Iran will take out our boats" now its "gas prices will go up and we will have to pay a trillion dollars at the pump" I feel like they need doomposting lessons. Like yes this will likely effect people but for how long years, decades? Once we control the Strait then what? The most I see happening is gas prices in Europe going up and them having to buy more from us or Russia.

A battleship can tank a few drone strikes defending a merchant vessel and be fine, but a ballistic missile will do some significant damage depending on the hit, so we've been focusing on degrading their capabilities to launch those before moving onto their mosquito swarms of drones and speedboats.

Gas prices are still lower than they were during the Biden administration at least where I am. I’m not too worried about it.

Keeping it locked down would require us to effectively take the Iranian shores around the choke point.

We’d have to commit a ton of resources to continuously monitor that section and likely actively endanger service members to a much greater degree than we already have so far.

Part of what would be required to actually occupy that area is taking out missile and anti-air infrastructure first. So no matter what, we needed to handle that part first.

You could argue we should have rushed to claim the Strait’s chokepoint after our bombing runs were complete, but they still would’ve been able to mine it without their missiles.

Plus there’s the fact that drones are too big of an issue for us still. They may not be that bad at our current range, but the closer we get the more effective they’ll become.

The regime is resilient and are good at finding quick replacements for leadership.

And all their leadership needs to do is give the order to launch mines from shore, send small boats to lay mines, or target ships with drones.

We don’t have good counters for those things right now.

Ugh... I refuse to recognise Turkey as a European country. But I will grant that they are in NATO and so diplomatically they "count" as "European" where war is concerned.

Again, the scenario we were debating was Iran launching strikes on Europe before this war began, which would provoke a war that Iran would not want. Iran firing missiles at European countries after the current war began is outside the scope of that hypothetical, and actually just further solidifies why Europe would not be thrilled about this war - before it started, things were fine, and after it started, Iran and their proxies started firing missiles at us (Turkey and UK bases on Cyprus so far).

To my knowledge Iran had not fired ballistic missiles at Turkey prior to the start of the ongoing US-Israeli operation.

The straight can be crossed with a 90% certainty nothing will happen. But civilian shipping wants 100% certainty, which is impossible to provide. Iran does not have any effective ability to stop ships from traveling the straight, beyond landing a lucky hit. But no merchant vessel wants to be the unlucky recipient of the lucky hit. So they are all staying put.
 
Feels like they effectively are in the “lash out” phase still. The drones and missiles are problems, but seems more like are ensuring maximum economic damage, which likely raises the question of “would they do this again if it works?”

You can bitch at Israel for striking the field, but Israel is prosecuting a war against Iran. Iran is doing their Samson option. Trying to fuck the global supply of oil and damage the region.

The US does have a good reason for doing this. Ironically as it goes on it’s reinforced, Iran’s entire counter attack is cluster munitions, attacking oil infrastructure, and random high rises in Qatar, UAE, and Saudi Arabia. The nuke shit does matter, but Iran being fucking retarded is more than enough.
