THE PURPOSE of grand jury subpoenas is stated, even by FAMOUS LAWYERS, to be to collect that evidence. boasberg is using a catch-22. they don't have enough evidence, allegedly, to subpoena him, which is how they would actually OBTAIN that evidence.

it is rare in general for grand jury subpoenas to be stopped. courts have a pretty high (not specific but usually very high) standard for doing so, because grand jury subpoenas are a lot more about finding out what's going on than actually punishing someone. the most annoying part is that they will do discovery if they're able to. this kind of quash is so rare that there is almost no actual empirical data on it. i would estimate a large handful of them total.
