Sorry this isn't weird or cringe but I'm pissed off.
Bob is well-intentioned, fairly pleasant, but a dumb boomer. Bob wants to include AI somewhere in software with a lot of users to make the line go up because he is a dumb boomer. Bob asks me what it would take to do it.
You want to slurp up a bunch of user data, feed it to an LLM and spit it back out at them? Fine, $XXXXX. Accurate estimate, I'm not just being spiteful or recommending to write ChatGPT from scratch. Ooooh, that sounds like a lot... let's send it to the offshore team. Try as I might, I can't convince him that it's not something you just pick off the shelf as there is a good bit of custom software involved to assemble around even if the pieces are standardized.
Later, the offshore team has hit a little itty-bitty snag with their code they stole off Google. The LLM works great (no it doesn't) but it just can't figure out how to get user data. Bob comes to me, we're having just a little problem here, might be just a little tweak, maybe you can help just a little?

They don't. The average person considers sleep to be "off" and so never reboot. They tap the power button, the screen goes blank, they tap it again, the screen turns on, that's rebooting.

In my last job, at least twice every week I was dealing with someone having issues with Office 365 that were solely due to having updates that required a reboot not applied due to ignoring the reboot notification in the taskbar.
It also doesn't help that Microsoft made the insane decision to change what clicking Shut Down in the power menu does.
A few years ago, they removed the Hibernate command from the Power menu and changed it so that clicking Shut Down hibernates the PC. If you have clicked Shut Down hoping to shut down PC to troubleshoot network issues and didn't know you have to hold the left Shift key while clicking Shut Down, nothing that is fixed by a shutdown gets fixed! Fun!

From what I've heard they more often think turning off the monitor turns the computer off. That or they just outright lie if you ask if they've rebooted it (uptime is in days).

That's the dumbest fucking thing I have ever read (today). How do you fuck up something as simple as turning off the goddam computer? At that point, you've lost the plot and need to go back to the drawing board to re-do your entire OS.

An operating system's worth is in part measured in how long it can run continuously in normal use.
Therefore if your system needs a reboot every 8 hours to be stable, it is extremely poor compared to almost any linux, which generally can easily last over a month even with the most unholy combinations involving wayland and gnome.

I'm guessing OEMs wanted MS to decrease boot times, because competition starting to use SSDs, but those were much more expensive per GB than HDDs and they wouldn't be able to use drive size in marketing.

TBH simply because MacOS (I can't be the only guy to still want to call it Macintosh) is bespoke for their hardware, it's extremely stable in my experience. Unless you're doing something like trying to force a new version on really really old hardware, then you're going to be ok. I mean, yeah you can get shitty app developers which cause crashes, but the actual core OS is solid, as much as I hate to say it.

And it uses a rational library management system so apps don't break every time the OS updates something. Generally MacOS only drops support for old applications when it has a major architectural change and drops a compatibility layer. I think old x86 apps still run using Rosetta 2

A real conversation I had 20 minutes ago with a customer
"It's not working should I unplug it and plug it in again?"
"No it's turned off because you haven't paid your bill in 4 months."
"Oh wait hang on it says the thing is resetting. That's good, right?"
"*Sigh*.... You know what, yeah let that reset and wait 15 minutes and if that doesn't work just call us back."
I swear to God that some people are so stupid or in denial that they just hear what they want to hear. By the way that "Your shit isn't working because you haven't paid your bill for months" is on my greatest hits of calls I receive. I usually get at least 2 a day.

At work I've managed to wrangle admin access to switches, but I still don't have superadmin access to the router and it's once again proving a total pain in the ass as the MSP has no fucking clue how VLANs work. The guy is always trying to setup new VLANs on new physical ports. The Fortigate router literally has so many worthless copper 1 Gbit cables hanging out of it, meanwhile it has this big beautiful 10 Gig LAG which is going to waste as he for some reason tagged it as an access port instead of a trunk on the switch.
Anyway I've given him a baby's first explanation of VLANs and twisted his arm by giving extremely explicit instructions on what to do, so I await next week where he'll inevitably fuck things up royally and make my life hell. $150/hr for this expertise btw.
