In between you gotta make people believe the nonsense though, which is the hard part, especially when the two parties had already shifted voter bases a few decades prior. But then again, there is a lot of money in pretending the vote actually changes the major policies. (I.e. outside of whether gays can marry, etc.)

One of the retarded things that "the emerging Democratic majority" shit misses is that the two American parties by design have to shift their positions to respond to the other party and to where the public is.
If you want at least half the vote, you need to stake out a position that at least half the country can get behind while also not repelling too many people.
And if one party finds a position that's wildly popular, an 80% position, then it benefits the other party to come up with a position that's damn close to the first party's position only with a key difference.
So one party will say that Social Security should kick in at 65 and the other party suddenly finds itself in need of passionately defending the vigor and work ethic of people up until they turn 66. Even though half the people in the party might personally believe that Social Security should kick in at 80, 66 it is because that's the sweet spot of luring some people in without actively repelling others.
The democrats right now have missed the part where you can't actively repel that many people.

Then you add in deliberate divisor debates fostered specifically for this purpose, like abortion, and it exacerbates this even more. There's really little reason it should be a partisan issue. In the UK it's a matter of conscience for MPs to vote on, not a party line thing. But in the USA it's hyped to the highest possible levels.
I liked the latest episode, as an aside. Ms. Youcis has a great voice. Though frankly the Stancil kissing grosses me out.

I like it how it failed so hard they had to disavow their own book in order to keep their careers.
The GOP seemed to fall for that failed prediction too, especially during the first half of the 2010s. I have to say I agree. Stancil really is consistent, and perhaps one of the last "true" White liberals that believes what he says and applies it to himself, as much as everyone else without irony, without detached distance without the self awareness that comes from embarrassment at being sincere.
You honestly kinda feel bad for Stancil-if he had been around in the 50s-60s, he could have had a fulfilling life fighting for civil rights or gay rights or whatever-winning arguments against uneducated racists and setting public policy.
He's a liberal out of time-with the cynical ironic detached world he lives in.
