HoI5 will never be good as long as there are investors breathing down Paradox's back. You could put the people behind Darkest Hour in charge of it and they would still produce HoI4 2.0 Troon Edition because HoI4 is Paradox's golden goose, surpassing its sales figures is going to be the primary goal of a sequel, and HoI4 got to where it was by becoming a series of visual novels with most of the gameplay automated or streamlined away and lowering the bar to entry as low as possible.

I think HOI5 is already in early stages of development, but a full announcement probably won't come until 2030. As for what it'll be like, it's dependent on who's making it.

I actually suspect we might see a sequel to Stellaris or even a fantasy GSG before HOI5.

An Stellaris sequel is possible due to the game being pretty popular amongst the Chinks.

A fantasy GSG due to how popular Anbennar is (and arguably more fun that vanilla) and other recent fantasy games too, albeit in other genres.

It's hard to say what's even worth doing for HOI5. Other than adding the shitty character creator, though they might not due to Hitler.

I really hope they ditch the 3D characters and move the start date to 1933.

I played the mod and it was some dookie with focus trees worse than vanilla. Speaking of focus trees, I entered DH discord and the first thing I saw was Algerian General talking about his brilliant idea of removing focus trees completely, arguably the best part of hoi4 for me. Also the lead gfx dude for DH was some transsexual named captainluck who inserted a lot of 1930s females in the loading screens which made me uncomfortable since I don't like these types of women and I could tell that she imagines herself to be one of them.

Remember way back in the day when TNO was touted as the Kaiserreich killer and that ol' gramps Willy was going to have to retire from the workshop for not getting with the times? It was bold, interesting and captivating in ways that Kaiserreich wasn't with its unique world, conflicts and out-there leaders that made Sternberg seem like a quaint moderate. Fast forward a few years and TNO is a corpse after removing everything that allowed it to compete with KR and for all its faults and missteps, Kaiserreich managed to put out several sweeping reworks while TNO's have languished in rework hell without a trace of completion during the same timespan.

Pickelhaubes off to the Kaiser of the Workshop. I'm way more of a KX person myself but it's impressive that they've stood the test of time all these years.

Yes. When someone talks about Darkest Hour, they are almost invariably referring to the old game that was the product of Paradox licensing HoI2 to a bunch of modders.

If you are thinking about Darkest Hour in context to a HoI4 mod, you are likely an eunuch.
