I have watched this in real time with my family members and it is quite possibly the most depressing thing I've ever experienced. My mom went from "Trump does a lot of bad, but at least he is good on the economy!" - > "Trump is bad wow, but at least hes not the Democrats who protect pedophiles" -> "Trump is our only hope for anything, who cares if he is a pedophile or protects pedophiles".

I think in my family's case, and maybe broadly for many people who think this way, they are at the point where their idealized reality is so detached from what is real that they can never turn back. Turning back represents admitting to ones own ego that their worldview was merely an illusion/lie/facade.
