Because the party that’s obsessed with Europe knows that Americans don’t want to be Europe and are not interested in European style “democracy.” So the only way they can force in their authoritarian bullshit is through fraud and gibs to minority voter blocks.
The important part is that it shows you're not immune to laws just because you call yourself a journalist, as if that makes you part of some upper caste. Journos are detestable creatures and any rights they're afforded should be downstream of rights given to individuals. I know the US has a tradition of giving journalists special protections but it still doesn't give them immunity to federal laws that don't explicitly carve out an exception for them.
I'm just glad trump is doing something about hoards storming churches instead sending another strongly worded tweet about it. If a prosecutor declines charges because of political affiliation, I'm glad it can be corrected at a federal level.
