Trying to enslave someone who knows the territory better than you do is not really an option. Africans had no idea what plants were safe to eat or how to navigate the local terrain, so if they ran off, they would almost certainly die, unless they were taken in by a local tribe, who ironically enough, would likely enslave them in far worse conditions. Slavery among the tribes of North America was essentially like a gang thing.
