Christian theology thread for Christians - Deus homo factus est naturam erante, mundus renovatus est a Christo regnante

how can a person have free will if the outcome is already determined?
This came up a while ago and the issue men tend to have with the concept is the extreme difficulty, if not sheer inability, to comprehend God's perspective let alone reconcile it with our own.

Concepts like predestination arise because we can only experience existence through the lens of linear time, for us events happen sequentially and that gives us a particular sense of cause and effect.

God exists outside of time in the eternal now, and any attempt to describe or explain that state is speculation at best.

One way to look at it is that the ultimate outcome is fixed, but the route to it and our individual roles in it are not. We have the free will to determine our own paths, but no matter what we do we lack the power to change God's path. This is not an infringement on our free will or a conflict with it, simply the reality of our own limitations next to God who has no limitations.

cursing the son for exposing your drunkenness

I read that to look upon your father's nakedness was a euphemistic term for pulling a CWC upon his own ma, given how the phrase us used elsewhere (Leviticus?). With the implication that it was both a rape and a power play to assert dominance and userp his brothers. Thus Caanaan was likely the result of incest.

Edit - funnily enough i had planned to read some commentary on Gen 11 (tower of Babel) this morning and just read that in Hebrew "make a name for ourselves" the word for "name" was "shem" so it feels consistent that the tales of Noah's sons & grandsons are warning against grasping at power, trying to take blessings that are not yours, or to force your will against the natural, divine order.

I think that God, even his long-suffering saw Babel as the third strike after Eden and the Flood and decided that was the time to divorce humanity and ""When the Most High (Elyon) gave the nations as an inheritance, when he separated the sons of man, he set the boundaries of the peoples according to the number of the sons of God (bene elohim). For Yahweh's portion was his people; Jacob was the lot of his inheritance". (Deuteronomy 32: 8-9). This explains the emergence of Ba'al and Molech worship happening after the flood, as the triune God let people worship the gods they preferred to him and kept the nation of Israel as his own.

Next time you're at the steak house, ask yourself "What would Jesus eat?"
Rack of lamb. Biblically speaking Lamb was Jesus's favorite meat.
I would implore the widow to keep her money so she can live to help another day, and implore the rich man to give, but also to stay rich so that he can continue to help. Giving everything you have helps only once, and makes yourself poor in the process.
The bible has many great stories and lessons within, just that one I'm not a fan of.
You should avoid thinking in this manner. "There are parts of the bible I like, and parts I don't like" is incorrect. Everything in the bible is there for a reason.
she denied my request to murder them and now I realize what a fool I was / am.
We all are lead astray, what's important to remember is that it is not the last time you will be made to understand your own foolishness.
I think if God ever had a plan, it was completely derailed at some point and the world it is today was not a part of his plan.
God does not play dice with the universe. Everything that is happening is both a result of human action, and also "foreseen" by God. (Foreseen is the wrong term, because to God there is no such thing as time, time is a worldly thing).
how can a person have free will if the outcome is already determined?
This is something I am currently struggling with, my church has explained to me that there is a difference between "free will" and "free agency", they argue that there is no will but God's will. I do not agree with this. I believe that we do have what we commonly refer to as "free will" as well as "free agency". If we didn't, there would be no significance to the fact that Adam and Eve ate the fruit. There would be no significance to acts of good or evil, as if we are determined to be good or bad at the time of our birth (or before), then we are simply what we are, and there is no reason to judge those among us that are evil, because hey, it's God's will for them to be evil, right?

I do struggle with this still though, because God is all knowing, he knows that some will be evil, he knows some will be good. The question is if he chooses those who are good and evil, or if he simply allows them to be without intervention.

There is a metaphor I like: Creation is a book, God writes that book. He allows us to write it in along side him, in the margins. He could peak forward at any time, but even if he does, he does not go back and change what he's written in response to that. So while he knows everything that's going to happen, everything we are going to write in the margins alongside him, he still sticks to his plan for the book. Our additions are there, and his story is there, in unity. This kinda lends to the "God has the plan but not the man" thing. God wrote in the book that someone would betray Jesus, and Judas wrote "and that man is me".

I think foreseen is a fine way to phrase it.

"According as he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before him in love: Having predestinated us unto the adoption of children by Jesus Christ to himself, according to the good pleasure of his will". (Ephesians 1 : 4-5)

I'm of the mind that God's sovereignty has chosen those that please him and cursed those that please him, we cling to free will that we might hold some power in our lives... I'm not so sure the Holy Spirit will abide in a heart that does not seek the Lord. The more prescient question to me is, "are the elect allowed to go to Hell?".

New Gangster Film from Yelena Popovich who directed the St. Nektarios of Aegina film "man of god" this time about St. Moses the Black. Looks compelling enough, weird to see Wiz Kalifah and other dudes in it. Think I see an EO funeral and Fr. Moses Berry in it.
I think 50 Cent is involved in it too. Man of God was good, so I'm optimistic for this movie.

Was watching an interview with the director, and she did mention she may work on a movie about Fr. Seraphim Rose which would be baller.

I haven't seen man of god yet gotta look it up. fr seraphim rose would be an interesting topic given his controversial position in EO.

I gave some sources here

how you doing pipkun? we haven't seen you in a while.
Also on what do you base that assertion?
been sick with the various viruses floating around. st basil the great proffered 3 years of abstinance from the eucharist as a form of repentence. the east doesnt have a just war position but iirc the summa has a very narrow definition of just war, think the iraq war wouldnt qualify.

generally the term refers to the catholics, the anglicans and the orthodoxies.

This surprises me, given historical matters such as the Crusades as well as people like Alexander Nevsky. Not to mention more "modern" stuff like the expansion of the British Empire and the Spanish Civil War. But while I'm not any of those three denominations, I am at a point where I've rejected the notion of Christian pacifism; there is nowhere in the Bible where it condemns any and all usages of violence by man - it's a tool which needs to be used properly.

Church says many things about war. Of course, conflict should be avoided, but war is not absolutely forbidden. Everyone should learn about Just War theory from Saint Thomas Aquinas.
