On the navy ships they had orders to drop practice depth charges to signal the sub to surface but the Sub had no knowledge of this, to their view, they were under attack, the blasts were VIOLENTLY rocking the ship, it broke the AC system so it became nearly 130 degrees inside the tube.
So imagine that, you have no comms with your home nation, tensions are ABSURDLY high and you and your men and being seemingly attacked by the enemy, WHAT WOULD YOU DO? Both the Captian and second in command ordered the nuclear torpedo to be loaded, from their position they stood capable of wiping out the majority of the US pacific fleet. But there was a 3rd man on board who got a vote
Our boy,Vasily said "We shall surface and get orders from Moscow, we may die but we will not die mass murders" or something similar to that
They surfaced IN THE MIDDLE of the entire pacific fleet and unfurled a big ass soviet flag
the whole thing was sureal and lucky beyond words, the odds of the torpedo flying was so high and yet because of HUMAN intervention, not blind luck, disaster was averted.
