But not really at all. If you want to take a materialist view, they believe the correct and good people always win because they're in a group that still exists and self defines as good, so it's not the birth of divine right thinking, it's the endgame of it, where they can't possibly lose because they've made every winner in the past a group on their own side through narrative building.

I don't see these thoughts as mutually exclusive. I was primarily alluding to the idea that ideology is the new religion and drawing attention to the fact that they share similar rituals, and maybe navelgazing a bit about the fact that I wouldn't be surprised if this sort of parsing of mundane acts playing out in the present is what gradually spirals out into those sorts of beliefs over time, with a healthy helping of romanticization and misinterpretation of the past.

We don't have to agree, though.
