there is an ulterior motive, under NATO and Denmark agreements the U.S. can basically do whatever the fuck they want militarily on Greenland, Trump (or whoever is telling him how to pursue this) seem to think their capacity to defend Greenland is contingent on them literally having the deed to Greenland while this isn't the case (U.S. defended Greenland while Denmark was occupied by Nazi Germany during WW2, and also operated there during the Cold War with over a dozen bases).
It's good policy for Russia. If your aim is to control and use the north passage you want the entry point controlled by a country with no power projection instead of your direct rival.
