That’s an inherent dogma of mainstream leftism. A poor person is oppressed and therefore pushed to do crime. The issue is that criminals are often retards on top of being poor or from a culture that doesn’t teach “being an anti-social menace will get you killed in places where people won’t come looking for you”.

The military going with something heavier makes sense because it needs to hold up to being treated roughly in combat. Similar with riot police. Cheaper & lighter, even when still well made, often means less durable. I looked up the M50. Compared to a 3M full-face, I'd be more willing to trust an M50 to hold up to rioters throwing rocks or using some kind of improvised melee weapon.
