Crimes of the Hot is a good example of how to make a show have a political message, but still make it entertaining. They'd never be able to pull something like that off today.
Today if they make an episode about immigration or something, they'd have it be about Decapodians coming to earth or something like that, and they'd have Zoidberg cock his eyebrow, look directly at the camera and say something like, "Friends! We may be cold blooded, but it's even more cold blooded to deny us health care."
Back in the original run it would have been more subversive like time travelers not have job chips and thus not being able to function in society or some shit as an allegory for illegal immigrants unable to get an ID and function without ever using the word immigration or breaking the fourth wall.

If you listen to the commentary on the episode where they all lost their jobs even the writers forgot about them. Like I think David X Cohen is the only one who remembered.

Thanks for letting me know how unwatchable the new seasons are. I still re-watch my boxset of the first 8 seasons every so often, but I ain't gonna bother beyond that.

Well... back in the day continuity was far less of a thing in cartoons than it is now. Back then it was usual for things to be "resest" at the beginning of every episode. (Ironically futurama kind of helped change that.)
I mean I love King of the Hill but I can name several things where the continuity was inconsistent. So it's not really surprising futurama (around that same era) was the same. The execs didn't pressure anything, TV tradition did.

I decided to rewatch the show cuz I was bored. I really enjoyed the original 4 season run. The movies were okay except for Into the Wild Green Yonder.
I always hated that one and still do today after watching it for like 3rd time I think now. It might be the worst butchering of the characters they did in the older seasons. Everyone is randomly just biggest sexist douche and every woman behaves like what stereotypical sexist man thinks women are like. The plot is just dumb, characters are acting very much out of character and super annoying, and the whole environmentalist hippie bullshit was awful, and was already done way better and funnier in the Birdbot of Ice-Catraz episode.
My new and biggest gripe with that piece of crap movie is the dumbest and most annoying character Frida Waterfall. Never liked her because she's just a retarded collection of stereotypes. Now though in the post troonpocaliptic world I just can't stand her. Maybe it was supposed to be a joke originally that she was voiced by man who did such horrible job that it's a very obviously a man's voice but it really irritates me and I can't stand it. Troons ruined everything, even the movie I already hated with all my guts.
Now I'm on season 6 and I feel like I'm probably gonna drop it here and not bother watching new episodes either. Just 4 episodes in and the show is already cramming LGBT bullshit down my throat with the robosexuality episode, which again was already done and done so much better in I Dated a Robot episode. To be fair, both episodes are quite dumb and very dated but at least one of them is funny.
Where did all the simple crew going on adventure type episodes go? Where's the worldbuilding and exploration of the new and crazy stuff from the future and all the alien shit from space? The characters really start to feel like they're just becoming one dimensional unfunny joke and one liner machines. And speaking of jokes, where are all of the super smart ass jokes that there's a big chance you won't understand unless you're really into math or physics or whatever?
It all feels so lame and boring now. Futurama is a sci-fi parody show, or was in the original run. I'm not into sci-fi really. I never watched Star Trek and know literally nothing about it. I never sat down to watch any of the Star Wars movies from start to end either (though I've played KOTOR 1 and 2), but I still enjoy the show a lot. It never felt like it was necessary to know and understand the reference material, the show was still interesting and funny, and most jokes still landed for me. I really don't feel that in the more modern post cancelation episodes.
There are way too many modern day inserts and pop culture references that don't make sense to exist in the universe. Like yeah original seasons had them too but they didn't feel too forced most of the time (Napster is the only sore thumb that stands out in my memory). The show was mostly focused on Fry and he was from that time the references were from and it was fine to have them since it's his culture. None of the any 2010 and onwards stuff feels like it belongs in that universe and feels just crammed there for the obligatory pop culture reference checkmark. And parodies also feel like super lame lowest effort crap like the eyePhone episode, not funny and not creative at all, and entire plot around viral videos and stuff is so mega cringe and feels even more dated than the obscure 80s and 90s stuff.
This isn't my first time watching. I watched all the "new" stuff from after 1st cancelation some years ago but I don't remember actively disliking it so much back then and feeling like the show bares absolutely no resemblance to the original run despite also binge watching from season 1 episode 1 and up to the new seasons 6 and 7. I hope maybe just first episodes are stinkers and it gets better later and if it doesn't I'll just drop it and remember the good old Futurama and ignore the rest of it.
I've heard around release that the reception to the newest run with Hulu was quite bad but now I'm honestly scared for how bad it truly is if I'm already disliking season 6 this much. Maybe it's better to not watch it and not find out.
And sorry for the rant. That S6E4 really annoyed me and I just had to vent somewhere.

Yeah I thought it might be. It's just current world affairs have ruined that gag for me personally. And I honestly have no memory of seeing any other member of the family besides her mentioning one of them in the movie.

It's just a cartoon, you shouldn't expect it to have continuity, plan things out, or reward viewers for remembering details from some episode that aired years ago.
