1. European nations are still clinging to the delusion that they're the great powers they used to be. So, their leaders are acting out of pure vanity.

2. These Euro leaders want to get in on the grift. If they can claim territory in the name of "defending the people of Greenland" or whatever noble-sounding rhetoric they pull out of their asses, then then can try and force a seat at the negotiation table securing money or resources for themselves. And then they can also crow about what wonderful defenders of democracy they are for their home
populations in their desperate attempts to hang on to power.
