EU France's Macron slams 'temptation to divide up world' among 'great powers' - French President Emmanuel Macron warned that the United States was "breaking free from international rules" and turning away from allies as he addressed top diplomats on Thursday in a speech dominated by the fallout from the US attack on Venezuela.

French President Emmanuel Macron said on Thursday that the United States was "breaking free from international rules" and "gradually turning away" from some of its allies in a traditional New Year address designed to spell out France's foreign policy priorities for the 12 months ahead.

"Multilateral institutions are functioning less and less effectively," Macron said in his annual speech to French ambassadors gathered at the Élysée Palace in Paris. "We are living in a world of great powers with a real temptation to divide up the world," he added.

Macron's speech comes as European powers scramble to come up with a coordinated response to Washington's increasingly assertive foreign policy in the Western hemisphere, including its capture of Venezuela's leader Nicolas Maduro and President Donald Trump's designs on Greenland.

The French president also touched on ongoing efforts to secure a ceasefire in Russia's war on Ukraine, days after he pledged to put French boots on the ground to safeguard Ukraine's security in the event of a peace deal.

Macron said Europe must protect its interests and urged the "consolidation" of European regulation of the tech sector.

He stressed the importance of safeguarding academic independence and hailed "the possibility of having a controlled information space where opinions can be exchanged completely freely, but where choices are not made by the algorithms of a few".

Brussels has adopted a powerful legal arsenal aimed at reining in tech giants – namely through its Digital Markets Act (DMA) which covers competition and the Digital Services Act (DSA) on content moderation.

Washington has denounced the tech rules as an attempt to "coerce" American social media platforms into censoring viewpoints they oppose.

"The DSA and DMA are two regulations that must be defended," Macron said.

We already did it more than 70 years ago you goofy French nigger. It is almost like he does not realize that he rules over a protectorate. Probably because the US is the most benevolent suzerain in human history.

The key word in this is "divided". Macron is fine with a single globohomo pan-Western hegemony to rule the globe. What he is upset about, what most of the European leaders are upset about, is that Trump has fractured the buddy-buddy alliance and prioritised the United States ahead of the cabal.

I don't think it's a good thing that Trump is so expansionist, but lets not let Macron pretend he's speaking from a moral position.

The German President has issued a very similar statement saying: "It is about preventing the world from turning into a den of robbers, where the most unscrupulous take whatever they want, where regions or entire countries are treated as the property of a few great powers,"

Again, the concern is not about robbery but about there being competing robbers.

You are reading it wrong. Your read require France and Germany to be capable of robbing anything but their own citizens blind.
The reality is that they fear being the victims. Especially when they have victimized their own people so much most sane people would accept the Trump yoke.
This is not 1900s France upset about US taking the Philippines. This is 2020s France afraid of an ideological revolution spurned by a great power guarantor.

Most of Europe is susceptible to a nationalist coup at this point. These disarmed countries are host to massive populations of angry natives who can be covertly armed and supported to overthrow the existing regimes. What percentage of the AFD would need to be armed by the US/Russia to pose a credible threat to the central government's monopoly on violence? Could Poland be coaxed to become the new regional power dominating Germany and its fellows on behalf of a greater foreign power? Violence is a means to an end and most of Europe is incapable of it.

Wait and see. The present governing systems of Europe are on borrowed time and just waiting to be overthrown by new foreign masters, in no particularly distinct way than any other regime is overthrown in a color revolution.

Macron you fucking snivelling little traitor, First take back your own country from the african invaders, then you get to talk about "the world". I hate Macron so God damn much.

this 100%.
trump could order his US forces (who are already stationed here anyway) to kidnap a bunch of our politicians and install some american general to govern my country as a US territory in their stead, and nobody outside the political class would mind very much. my state doesn't have real sovereignty or agency anyway, and domestic policy under a trump appointed occupation government would most likely be more tolerable than what our own politicians have been doing for the past half century.

Every time I read about some EU politician bitching about Trump I'm reminded of this

Only mad because he's not getting a cut.

Which means?

He has Delusions of Being a Great Power.

Sad.

Many such cases.

The "rules-based liberal order" was always an American affectation, a fiction that could only exist because we were the unchallenged global superpower. These people are children crying that their make-believe didn't become real.

He’s mad that he’s not powerful or relevant enough to be one of those great powers.
Of course he would if he could, but he can't. Libya showed that France ain't dividing up or conquering anything these days. Oh yeah, and his country is overrun with Africans and Sand Niggers.
