Sonichu [Fan Comic] Rosechu's Story - A reimagining of the Sonichu story from Rosechu's perspective.

I've gotten so use to _blank_'s portrayal of Sonichu, I'd forgot he's not a villain in-canon(or as in-canon as Sonichu gets. anyway).

Great job making this sceen way way less awkward and weird, Trickle. I actually WANT to know what goes one with these interpretations of characters

Thank you very much! :)

Yeah, though, Sonichu's not quite a villain. I might've mentioned before, but I'm not planning on having a lot of true villains in this story. There will be quite a few conflicts, though.

Kel looks like she's been caught thinking about David the Dragonite.

And she was dreamily humming "Puff the Magic Dragon" under her breath, too. xD

Heh, here's the thing though- I really don't write along lines of "heroes" or "villains." My version of Sonichu isn't interested in global domination or anything villainy like that. I will say my interpretation does have a lot of villainous traits - he's very forceful, aggressive, manipulative and spiteful character. All the same, despite having the ability to take on dragons and armies of kill-bots or whatever, he's still very much restrained by his idiot of a father and the fact that he has been more or less relegated into a subserviant position. But I'll go on about that in my own thread another time...

...as for the matter at hand! I really, really like this page since you just took Chris' page and totally spun it on its ear. Whenever Chris writes a female character, their entire dialogue and raison d'etre is to "orbit around the belts" of the male characters and be proud of their female genitalis- so proud they they should be willing to expose themselves to the world at large, irregardless of their age. Here though, you took yet another one of Chris' groan-inducing lines and made it feel natural and innocent. You made them feel like children instead of a pair of fuck dolls. So all the points to you - you done great. Also, glad you were able to meet your Sunday "deadline." Keep up the great work!

I'll admit, I got that impression about your Sonichu too. It might've been Magi-chan's little speech about him being the "yellow devil". In a way, there's an epicness to that, but I think in the end I'm glad he's a bit more of a three dimensional character.

I don't know exactly what I'd call it, but I feel like I've got a knack for taking story ideas and making them better. I'm not that great at making my own stories, but if I have something to work off of that inspires me, I can hit my stride, so to speak. I suppose it also helps that whenever it comes to Chris' writing, he always tries to make the things his characters say seem innocuous, but the subtext sort of betrays what he's actually focused on.

Anyway, here's the behind the scenes look I promised. I don't know that it's incredibly interesting, but I hope you guys get a kick out of it at least.

Reading this take on the panels from "Genesis of the Lovehogs" just highlights how frequently Chris uses characters as plot devices or even scenery. Chris' Kel doesn't really react to Sonichu's appearance because she's basically just a reason for Rosechu to have a place to live and a credit card to splurge on.
It's been pointed out before, Trickie, but you do a great job of introducing a little subtext into the original material in a way that gives the characters a great deal more depth. Bravo!

Hey! I've been following your story since you first started. First comment though; Just wanted to say I absolutely LOVE your process of creating a page!! :heart-full: I think I'm going to adopt it myself and see how it works for me. As someone who draws comics for fun, I've noticed my own process leaves a rather low quality, cluttered, confusing mess lol I only draw casually, but between you and _blank_ I've felt very inspired lately.

Keep up the good work! Both of you, I cannot wait to see how your stories unfold.

Oh, of course! Chris treats a lot of what should have been key characters as background extras who've been given a line or two. Bill was only ever there to spill cherry cola onto a petri dish. It's never explained why he (presumably a good guy, if this is the same Bill from the pokemon world) was working for Giovanni, someone who's usually considered evil, and creating what he no doubt knew was going to be used as a weapon. Was he being forced to work there? Were the pay and benefits just really that good? No one really knows because Bill was only ever just a cog that helped move the soulless mechanical monstrosity that was the comic's plot forward, leaving it devoid of any kind of meaning or believability.

The thing that always strikes me about Sonichu fan works is that literally every single parody has at least double the effort put into it than the original work had.

I'm flattered! Although I don't know how much effort he really put in. Despite the lack of planning, the atrocious word bubble placement, I sometimes wonder if that was really just all the effort he could muster.

I'm happy to hear that I inspired you. Is this an existing comic you're talking about? Or is this going to be a new fan comic? Either way, I'd be interested to see what you come up with! :)

You guys are sweethearts, all of you! I confess I really love comments, even if they're negative ones. I don't know if that makes me an attention whore, but I almost don't care at this point.

I try to hold back on filling the thread with my replies to comments and such, and just keep it to when I have some new content to post, so here's a sketch of one of the more popular Sonichu characters, Mary Lee Walsh...

This character design isn't final, of course. I'm still trying to decide whether or not to go with the more canonically accurate viking helmet or the more visually appealing blond bob cut with devil horns...

Definitely the blond bobcut. Pleaseeeeeee.

Lol make it a transformation.

Mary Lee Walsh, a normal everyday viking helmet-wearing dean of a community collage. But when her campus is in danger, she uses the magical powers of her helmet to become the blond haired, devil-horned warrior.... Slaweel the Witch: Defender of PVCC!

I know the struggle. I've been working on my own continuation of Sonichu on and off over the past two years, and I still haven't decided how to portray Mary. I'm leaning towards either starting as she looks in canon and her appearance changing, or just going with the memetic version of her (blond bob cut, horns, etc). The latter would probably be funnier, but it's still a surprisingly difficult decision (or, at the very least, as difficult as Sonichu-related decisions can be).

Kel is quickly becoming my favorite character so far, I love her expressions!

This one's definitely a tough choice. I'd say go with the canon design, but either works.

This design I feel works very well already.

It has the sex appeal (bobbed hair, cleavage) that is a big part of what made MLW a fan-favorite ever since troll arts on /v/ in 2007, but she also comes off as recognizably an educated authority figure in her glasses and suit, truly a Dean.

I feel this Mary would work with either blonde or gray hair.

Why not just both gray and blonde like how Blank did it?

Blank did blonde with a light grey streak, and Chris' depiction has a much darker shade of grey. I don't know how good it would look in my style and the two tone hair color might become a pain to get to look right.

Lol make it a transformation.

Well, according to Sonichu #10, her taking "makeover potions" is canon, but I don't know if I want to have her be constantly switching appearances all the time... I'm sure she can defend the PVCC all the same, though. xD

It's tough, yeah. Should you go with canonical accuracy, or should you go with a depiction that's more iconic and more appealing...? It's funny, I don't think it'd be such a quandary with any other character. I've taken liberty or two with at least one character so far, after all (that being Kel). I guess it's probably because Mary is not only such a big focus of the comics, but she's also one of the more popular characters.

Kel is quickly becoming my favorite character so far, I love her expressions!

This one's definitely a tough choice. I'd say go with the canon design, but either works.

I've grown quite fond of Kel too, actually. It's a shame she's going to be basically gone after the first chapter or so. Hopefully some of the rest of the cast will be as entertaining, but I'm almost afraid of getting to chapter 2 and being like "this comic was so much better when we had Kel...".

That's good, actually, I'm glad I was able to get that across. I don't want her to just become a walking pair of tits who likes to play kick the autistic, she deserves to be more interesting than that.

In fact, I think I've got a good way to make the dark gray hair and blonde bob cut work in her back story, but I may have to ditch the viking helmet. I'll have to do a little more research, so we'll see.

Why not do a golden helmet with long bond hair flowing out? Comic MLW would scream to me more of a Valkyrie kind of design to me. You don't even have to draw wings, but I was thinking, what if you gave her grey angel wings, sort establishing that she isn't good(at least to Chris she isn't) but establish he as someone who tried to help Chris. Maybe as an added twist, she has horns as a part of her head, but her helmet has holes that they can fit through. I was thinking it would work something like Angelina Jolie's Maleficent character: It looks like the horns are just part of the headwear, but in actuality they are part of her head. Maybe it could be like some kind of "one winged angel" form for her.

This series reminds me of an old comic book series titled "Webslingers: Tales of Spider-Man," where the author'd revisit old Spider-Man stories and tell themm from a different angle, adding a bit of a psychoanalitic flair. I love how your changes are mostly very subtle, yet add so much more to the Sonichu Saga Chris could ever have mustered. I'm impressed.

I like that there isn't the insta-lust between Sonichu and Rosechu, at least on Rosechu's end, and I like that you're putting an emphasis on her just being glad that she's not alone anymore. That's something that Chris never really touched on that could have really been easily turned into small to major plot points, especially later on when all of the other sonichus and rosechus start coming out of the woodwork. I always kind of wondered why nobody in the series ever got slightly depressed that they weren't some uber-special oddity anymore and thus not the center of attention, and then felt guilty because they really didn't want to go back to the alternative of being the only one of their kind.

It's been interesting to watch the MLW discussion above. I've run into something of a Mary Lee dilemma when sketching out the plot for my Sonichu wrestling fic.
Obviously she's a big part of the original canon, so for something based closely off of that, like Rosechu's Story, she's going to be pretty necessary.
However, for a story like mine that's already changed settings and characters, there's a part of me inclined to leave her out.
Chris' work contains many characters based on real people. MLW is rare amongst these in that she a) didn't insert herself into Chris' world by choice, reacting to a disruptive student in the course of her job; and b) asked Chris at least once to stop drawing her.
There's an argument that the genie is out of the bottle, and regardless of whether I use an MLW, Googling her name will always give pages of Sonichu fan art and Chris' own soul-scarring Rule 34. I dunno. I'd love to hear if anyone else struggled with this, and what they decided.

When was this?
Part of Chris' attempts to apologise to MLW involves this panel where it turns out a witch called Slaweel was impersonating MLW for years, and Chris was apparently too lazy to stop her.

B http://www.sonichu.com/cwcki/File:Apology_to_Mary_Lee.jpg

Based on this I assumed that her involuntary appearances as a villain in Sonichu were a significant part of her issues with Chris, particularly given Chris' desperate attempts to keep the Evil Dean character by chantging the name and insisting it was never meant to be the real-world Walsh.

Turns out according to the CWCki that the MLW retcon might actually be part of the Miyamoto Saga though - Chris changed a bunch of names for characters based on real people because he didn't want a Sonichu game to run into (non-copyright related) legal problems.

So maybe she didn't explicitly ask him to stop, but Chris did seem very aware that she wasn't happy with being in his comics.

I thought he asked people to stop drawing her cause he was uncomfortable realizing he found the troll's version of her to be sexually appealing.

and of course when Chris wants something to be stopped, it exponentially increases.
