They're going at Venezuela due to wanting to tie it into immigration. The claim is all these Venezuelans in the country are or might be connected to Tren De Aragua bringing drugs and crime into the country along with every other migrant legal or illegal.
Striking the boats while fantasizing about how it was theoretically possible drugs could have been present on such boats was supposed to help back up this narrative to help make the deportations being done look morally righteous.
Since really, currently, they're looking like a bunch of incompetent assholes shoving random legal migrants into detention centers. Or trying to imprison people in random countries for small fortunes, like how they're paying $7.5 million to have 75 random people with no criminal record in work camps of some sort, for whatever amount of time (for life?).
Focusing on Venezuela also lets Trump push the fantasy that he's only going to concentrate on what he imagines to be within America's "sphere of influence". Should help to understand that this is Stephen Miller's brain child as he was eager for any justification to support the deportations so they didn't try looking for any real military reason to do any of this.

I haven't been able to find fuck all on Tren De Aragua before 2021, in terms of power ranking for latin american drug cartels it has to be one of the smallest players in the game. i'm pretty sure Venezuela makes more money off of runescape than drugs

I think they find the deception aspect repulsive. "How dare you get surgery to pretend to be a female and share a changing room/bathroom ? You should be a MAN and go there with your penis intact!" The charges are funky since the government only decided to bring up the charges after Abrego won his civil case in Maryland regarding facilitating his return to the US.
To avoid the vindictiveness claim they were desperately trying to avoid admitting to Blanche's involvement. This is a pretty remarkable case since it's usually almost impossible to prove vindictive prosecution yet they've been so shitty about their handling of this and refusing to just deport the guy that it's making it easier for his team to claim this. For greater context, Trump's admin has refused to deport Abrego Garcia to Costa Rica as he'd agreed to.
