The Navy has been trying, and failing, to build new destroyer and cruiser classes for the past 25 years. I doubt they'll have better luck with a larger ship.
I would really love it if they make something for the marines that has 16 inch guns and a helicopter flight deck at the rear like one of the designs developed as a potential refit for the Iowa class.

Oh I certainly think there are ways to protect them/beef up their defensive capabilities. I really think the best option would be to create a new class of ships that maybe three large caliber guns on them, but ships that could be faster than the old battleships but still provide heavy bombardment capabilities without relying solely on offensive missiles.
