Hard disagree. Mental illness makes creating art harder, not easier. It's tough to find the time to practice drawing or scales when you're hearing voices or too depressed to move. People who make pretty good art while suffering from schizophrenia, autism, bipolar, or the aftermath of child abuse are able to do that in spite of their conditions, not because of them, and often they're only able to create once their conditions are effectively managed, accommodated, or treated. A healthy artist is a productive artist. The idea that you need to suffer to be creative is a harmful myth, in my opinion.

You don't HAVE to suffer to be a great artist, but art from people who have suffered usually has a lot of soul. That being said, I do agree with you in principle, I mean imagine if Kurt Cobain hadn't been depressed and drug addicted while he was in Nirvana, but at the same time, imagine Nirvana if Kurt hadn't been depressed and drug addicted. It's hard to reconcile the idea that it's easier to create when you're in a good headspace with the fact that some of the most prolific artists of all time have been people barely held together at the seams.

Nirvana is like the movie The Crow.
Both are fine on their own, and The Crow is probably in my top 10 favorite movies, but neither would have nearly been as popular as they became had Kurt Cobain/Brandon Lee not died. Same goes for The Dark Knight and Heath Ledger (to a lesser extent perhaps) and even Fast and Furious got a bump in popularity with Paul Walkers death, but that one was short lived because that series is the definition of slop.

Kurt Cocaine was a slouching, heroin-addicted, dysfunctional, angry, brooding, procrastinating degenerate, constantly in physical and mental pain, who hated his fans, hated his critics, hated his music and hated himself. That's exactly why I love him, personally, reminds me of myself during a shit period in my life. I got better though, he didn't.
Also the MTV Unplugged show is really good, probably the highlight of their entire career.
