That's a weak finalist group. Tanahashi getting pity votes even though his year hasn't been anything special. OZAWA could have had a chance if he didn't get hurt and miss the last three months. Goto and Takeshita are there simply because they had to get to five. Saya is the most deserving, but honestly it felt like she won by default here. Regardless, congrats to her.

And what's worse are the WWE shills pretending it was still high art and satisfying to have John lose. "Oh when Cena smiled it showed he was content, He never gave up but he knew his body was done!" GET OUTTA HERE WITH THAT BULLSHIT!

I don't think I'm some "genius" like Vince Russo, I just know it could have been a good story, it could have actually gotten Gunther seriously over because he'd be a compelling bad guy. There was no buildup for this match, it just happened and that's embarrassing because Hunter and his lackeys knew months ahead it would end with Cena vs Gunther.

You know, I agree with you, but you're looking for something in the product that hasn't existed in almost 30 years. The promo you linked was one of the best Austin ever cut. You know why that is? Because he had a personal issue with Hitman. You know why people liked it? Because personal issues draw fucking money. Memphis style booking heavily emphasized this type of writing/creative direction in wrasslin' because it made people invested. "Holy shit, that is one hell of a dumpster fire, but I just gotta watch what happens!"

As it stands now, personal issues aren't a "thing" in feuds anymore. The feud between Punk and McIntyre was a classic example of personal issues being the basis for a series of fights that would lead to a climactic conclusion that left both men battered and bloodied. Feuds and programs are written more along the lines of "I'm the best in the world. Oh, you say you're better? Let's fight!", which is fine to some degree, but it lacks any depth beyond one match. Professional wrestling should have the answers to three questions:

1. Who the fuck are these guys?

2. Why the fuck are they fighting?

3. Why should I give a shit to pay money to see it?

If you can't answer all three, there is no credibility to your product and it is nothing more than glorified indy slop.

The Cena v Gunther match, as it stands, is fine. It was dramatic, it had great moments, and both performers gave their best. The right man went over. Yes, we can look at the "deeper" meaning behind Cena tapping, how that is the antithesis of "Never Give Up", that Cena realized there was nothing else he could do and the graceful thing to do was tap, and whatever else you want to glean. But I certainly don't think it was the best way for this entire thing to end. I agree that the last opponent for Cena should have been an established program on its own. The tournament angle was great, but you can't have two weeks of buildup for something being billed as THE FINAL MATCH. Give Cena and Gunther some free reign to cut promos and get into scrums, get people worked up/hyped, and I think we would all be much more positive about how things turned out. Overall, the entire Cena Retirement Tour was poorly thought out, poorly executed, and tried to do too much with not enough resources. It should have been drawn out over a 2 or 3 year span, not given 35 dates for one year.
