Also, their "cultural dominance" relies on people thinking giving them what they want is easier than telling them to shut up and fuck off. But, you know... when you give a mouse a cookie...
This actually tracks to why they
used to be able to meme and can't anymore.
Historically, my base assumption (which was partially correct) was that their turning puritanical drove off the most accomplished memesmiths they had - and while this
was absolutely true, it also wasn't the whole picture: with the way things had gone in 2008, a lot of the base decided they didn't need to
bother trying to make their message understood by the masses; "we have the power, so fuck you, we're taking what we want" was the implication, and it's essentially how they governed, both during that time and after it.
It's why they stopped even pretending to give a shit about consent of the governed: In their worldview the dominance of 2008 meant that any opposition to them was irrelevant. Obama led this way with his intentionally freezing out anyone who wouldn't kiss his ass. DNCers at the time stopped even
pretending to give a fuck about mainline issues the voters cared for because now we can do what we want.
That shift, brought about in no small part due to the implosion of the Neocons
leading to the 2008 blowout, is what essentially kickstarted the progs overrunning lefty communities and driving out anything even hinting at moderation, and looking back on it, as someone who watched it all happen from an insider's perspective, it's kind of wild to see how these pieces fit together like this.
