If we ever go to war over Taiwan we're certainly going to want naval infantry; and even outside that context they effectively function as our psychotic shock troops, a role that I've only ever heard veterans praise them for. Never once in my life have I heard someone bad-mouthing the combat aptitude of Marines. It's like the Rangers except fifty times more of them.
Far smarter men than the author of that article note that littoral combat (which is what the Marines are trained for) is still highly relevant and important in modern military doctrine.
