I am aware that this topic had already been discussed on the shitposting board. However, I am willing to have a more serious debate about the topic.
The etymology of the term sperg comes from Austrian pediatrician Hans Asperger. In english, the letter g in his surname is pronounced as a hard g such as in game or gay. However, phonemes are always able to change based on how they are spelled. like how centrifugal is pronounced as a hard g, but centrifuging is pronounced as a soft g (dʒ). This is because the root word also ends in a soft g.
When looking at words that end with ging we see that two consecutive g's are pronounced as a hard g when they are preceded by ing such as in the words tagging, begging, chugging, and a-logging, just to name a few. However, only one g preceded by ing is pronounced as a soft g or dʒ as in ranging, expunging, scavaging, and hinging. (because their root words also end in dʒ) However, there are exceptions to the rule. For example, the g in boomeranging is pronounced as a hard g.
I initially thought that it was pronounced /ˈspɛrdʒˌɪŋ/ (SPERJ ing), but after looking at how so few words that end with a hard g change to dʒ, I now think that it is pronounced /ˈspɛrgˌɪŋ/ (SPERG ing).
P.S: Either there are words with a hard g that change into a soft g that change when you append -ing or I'm insane because I swear there are some but I do not see any in the dictionary.
The internet slang term sperg (IPA: /ˈspɛrg/) is a derogatory term that refers to how one with Aspergers' syndrome (now high-functioning autism) can get worked up and be very vocal and angry about minor, even trivial things. When someone is sperging on the internet, they are unneccesarily upset about something not important and probably typing out long-winded posts to vent their frustration.
