I believe the campaign fund excuse was a cover explanation. IIRC they had under $200 million in that fund when Kamala took over, and she spent well over a billion.
The establishment knew Biden was unelectable, and Kamala was as bad of not worse. They'd happily give that $200mil to Trump, much less just back to their donors, to have been able to pick their candidate at the convention.
Kamala and the Libshits stole the nomination. They are a Black Female political death cult, they knew it'd probably be a White man picked at the convention, most likely Newsom if Pelosi had enough skeletons to threaten people with. So Karine Jean-Pierre forged, or at least edited, Biden's drop out letter to add him endorsing Kamala. You could tell when it happened the Democrats had no idea what to do with the information, it obviously wasn't planned. Dimwitted people would think that was over Biden dropping out, but they were demanding and bullying Biden into it. It was because endorsing Kamala wasn't part of the deal.
So, that had to figure out what to do. Would revealing the coup and retracting the nomination be more damaging than running Kamala? We know now that the answer absolutely yes, but we also don't have to deal with the trannies, Tankies and tarbabies freaking out over a shift to a center candidate.
