Fantastic post. I also personally blame our animal husbandry and ability to domesricate them. Suddenly animals are not tools anymore, but allies and even friends. A strong sense of sympathy grows towards them. That sympathy I think short circuits our brain when interacting with brown mongrels. We don't see them as evil people, we see them like any other animal and think "I can domesticate that".
