if you look at it at a micro level you get the same problem: having a 'family' structure where one or two working age children are expected to carry not only their own parents but also two uncles and an aunt (all childless) is just not feasible in the long run.

This is the major reason for low Asian birthrates. Asian cultures expect men to take care of their and their wives' parents in their old age, but when that burden is only spread across a single child, that child can't afford to have children of their own or even really take care of themselves.

The Western model of having each generation be financially independent is much more resilient to population decline. The nuclear family is superior to "multigenerational households".
