One of the things Ron Paul used to harp on back in the 00's was that the US government keeps kicking the can down the road when it comes to market intervention. A crash is inevitable due to all the borrowing and money printing, and the longer it's delayed, the worse it's going to be. I still think this is true today. Yeah, they're gimping it so hard these days the cynic in me wonders if they've finally hit a capacity wall (i.e. they're sick of pouring billions into GPUs and/or they can't get access to any more resources to devote to it; 'member those data centers in the northwest that can't get power now because the nearby cities are saying "fuck you make your own"?) and they're just masking it by restricting more and more what the systems will generate. At a minimum it serves to slow down requests while you massage the prompt to coax cooperation out of it.

Yeah. Some of it's better with major hardware behind it (mostly video generation) but the rest has caught up pretty quickly on consumer-grade hardware now. Hell, some of the coding LLMs can actually run tolerably well on CPU only now. Could've sworn it was one of the uncensored OpenGPT models on ollama. It's "only" 4 or 5 tokens per second, but the results are identical.
