Creepy Unsolved Mysteries - From unsolved murders to unidentified people to unexplained supernatural events, what are some of the creepiest unsolved mysteries you've ever heard of?

Natalie Wood anybody? Robert Wagner posted a tribute on the 44th anniversary of her death.

I have a theory. The most plausible one to me is that Robert Wagner and Chris Walken were in some kind of tryst on the boat...maybe possibly drunk. Natalie walked in on them, Walken promptly lost his shit, and either intentionally or accidentally caused her head injury. Maybe he then knifed her thinking it'd look like she was either bitten by a shark or that she killed herself.

She was deathly afraid of water, so much so that Bette Davis, with when they did a film together in the 50s, called The Star (apparently it was to be a parody of Joan Crawford? @The Last Stand anything?) and there was a scene involving a lake or something. Natalie didn't want to do it so either they cut the scene or Bette tried to help her overcome her phobia. I can't remember. So in theory it wouldn't make sense for her to be wandering alone at night unless she was thrown overboard. I don't even think she would have used a lifeboat.

The two things I will always wonder about her is who caused her death, and is it true that Kirk Douglas raped her.

This. The Manhunter take on Hannibal Lecter, an intellectual poseur who was ripping up college girls, is much closer to reality than the Grand Guignol fantasies of Anthony Hopkins or Mads Mikkelsen.

Who would the exceptions be? Ed Kemperer, Israel Keyes, maybe BTK?
I am convinced that Keyes is a tall story teller and him being this insidious monster that stashed "murder kits" all over the country is completely blown out of proportion. He of course deserves to be locked away forever. Kemper is definitely an outlier, still stone crazy and did unspeakable things which, to his credit, he acknowledged and also knows he should be locked away forever.

I'd say ONS is another outlier, he would've gotten clean away with everything if it wasn't for those meddling kids 23andMe or what that genealogy/DNA testing site is called.

Definitely Kemper, along with the lesser known Nathan Leopold. Organized serial killers, the ones who carefully plan their crimes, tend to be average or above in intelligence as a general rule. They're probably much less common, though, than disorganized killers acting on impulse, lust, and/or rage, and their tendency to be ideological blurs the line between them and terrorists.

The FBI treats Ted Kacyznski as the serial killer with the highest measured IQ, but to everyone else Kacyznski is an Anarcho-Primitivist domestic terrorist. His manifesto can be legitimately analyzed, criticized, assessed, and (quite frankly) even learned from to an extent. I'd say either Kemper or Leopold are about as smart as true serial killers get before they start coming up with justifications coherent enough to consider them extremists. How serious they are about their stated motives can vary, but the idea that Kacyznski was just John Wayne Gacey with bombs is pretty obviously an attempt to downplay his actual motivations because nobody wanted to acknowledge that America in the '90s was beginning to have a terrorism problem. The guy actually went to prison with, and befriended, Timothy McVeigh despite not agreeing with his actions, which is just...yeah. I'm completely baffled by how anyone could see those two hanging out and not question what was coming next if we didn't get our violent extremism issues under control.

I think, at that point he had a life sentence without possible death penalty, so implying he had more victims wouldn't hurt him at all. They could take him out of his cell for questioning or even take him somewhere to show where his totally real victims were buried. At the very least it was extra someone to talk to.
It was a bit shittier than that -- law enforcement would effectively feed him details on cases so he could 'confess', because they saw they had a willing retard they could use.

I don't think Dennis Rader rates anywhere in the vicinity of being a 'genius' serial killer given how he was caught.

Zodiac, maybe, although I've always wondered if it was dumb luck and some of his puzzles were horseshit.

One of the things that I think separates actual serial killers from more organized terrorists as @Bothriolepis was describing is that the serial killers seem to get sloppier as they go along, either wanting to get caught or just not capable of keeping things together.

Charles Ng and Leonard Lake are a good example of this. They had killed at least 11 people, with potentially up to 25 (based off of personal effects and the such found on the property where they committed their crimes) and were caught because Ng had uncontrollable kleptomania and police discovered stolen goods and a pistol in plain fucking sight.

Serial killers tend to either get comfortable and less disciplined the more that they kill as they tend to think that they aren't going to get caught, or they start to escalate their crimes as a part of indulging the fantasy aspect -- shit like less of a cooldown period between killings, acting on busier streets/in the day time, hitting places where they may be potential witnesses, etc -- which makes it easier for law enforcement to track them down, either by them leaving clues or due to heightened security. I believe Joel Rifkin was caught due to increased patrol cars, for example, and I believe an English prostitute killer in the 70s was also caught due to police established checkpoints, or a traffic stop. It is less a desire to be 'caught' and more just showing poor impulse control as others have noted.

Herb Baumeister, a guy who killed gay men, is another one, as he was eventually caught because one of his victims survived and he was able to identify him later because he went back to the same bar after killing a friend of the survivor and attempting to kill the survivor. Baumeister is interesting because he was actually pretty successful, lived a double life and got away with his murders for 14 or so years. There was a longform piece talking about Baumeister that I can't find anymore, but it had stories about how he filled the area around his indoor pool with mannequins and other weird quirks. Dude had a lot of shit going on, even when accounting for a serial killer's psychology.

There's also the need for serial killers to seek validation/connection in some way for their crimes. There's the letters or phone calls that Zodiac, ONS, Berkowitz and Rader were known for doing, but there's also the component where serial killers like to re-live their crimes and they tend to hang around crime scenes or police as a part of that (as well as going to dump/bury sites and sometimes even dredging up the remains. It's also why they collect trophies.) Berkowitz was caught because of a traffic ticket, but it has been speculated the reason he was in the area in the first place was because he was hanging around the scene of one of his crimes.

This isn't an unsolved one, but I used to wonder about Ted Kaczynski, and if his past in college is a big reason that led to him eventually snapping and going psycho the way he did.

Mostly just based on that three year experiment that they did on him in other students where he was abused, for three years of course.

I used to wonder if this is what actually made him into a killer. They say that he already was showing mental illness issues before this, but could it have worsened it? That entire experiment sounded like hell.

Even if it didn't make him into a killer, it sounded like it permanently screwed him up mentally.

oh yeah I heard that backstory on NPR decades ago, shit is some Spider-Man villain tier shit

It was 100 percent psychological abuse, and no college in their right mind would put their students through that now. I'd have to dive deeper into it, but it almost seemed like that changed him. But maybe something else would have made him snap. But come on, what they did to him and all those other students was beyond messed up.

oh yeah it's still on him to choose to blow up randos in the mailroom because of it, but holy shit you could just add "you wanna know how I got this manifesto? funny story, really...."

Correct me if I'm wrong, but from what I saw, he was anti-psychology, right? It makes a lot more sense when you see the views he had, and what made him so against those things. He swore that it didn't impact him, but I don't believe it.

Mostly because I got the feeling that he was a very quiet person in his youth, and someone like that typically can't handle people verbally abusing them to their face the way that experiment went.

iirc he was big mad about psychs to the point L Ron was all "breh"

Figures. Yeah, something has to happen to you to turn someone against a thing like that. I do think the college experiment might have gave him lingering problems that turned him into a killer when he got older.

It also brings up a good theory over if someone can be made into a killer if they didn't have the typical problems that tend to lead to being a killer. Kind of like how a lot of killers had some kind of TBI or head injury, stuff like that.

I also like the idea that before he was Unabomer he was Zodiac

It's insane to me that he was never caught, and people still can't piece together those killings. They can catch the Night Stalker decades later but can't do the same for the Zodiac?
wow just because Uncle Ted had Zodiac's hood in his terror shack people have to go and make it weird

also holy shit glancing online clickbait seems to indicate the feds sold THE outifit at auction

For some reason this reminds me that Richard Ramirez used to have professional papers made for him that actually had his name printed on it like some kind of celebrity thing, lol.

Which also reminds me of that famous story of that man who took the identity of a boy who wrote letters to multiple killers where he claimed that he wanted to drop out of school and what should he do.

Ramirez and others told him not to drop out of school. Kaczynski's reply was something like "I don't know you so I can't tell you what to do."

Which is kind of interesting.

I've kept up with enough true crime to know that any theory requiring a serial killer to be unusually intelligent will  typically be wrong. Contrary to popular stereotypes, pure serial murderers usually aren't very bright.
They're more likely to be the disorganized kinds like Richard Trenton Chase, people barely above the level of animals to the point they don't even try to conceal their crimes. The organized ones who actually keep their shit together to some extent, like Ted Bundy or John Wayne Gacy or Edmund Kemper, are rare.

This is probably because murdering people just for fun is a quintessentially stupid activity.
The FBI treats Ted Kacyznski as the serial killer with the highest measured IQ, but to everyone else Kacyznski is an Anarcho-Primitivist domestic terrorist.
I don't view Uncle Ted as a serial killer either. To a serial killer, killing is the actual point in itself. Ted was doing it to push his political/philosophical agenda, which makes him a terrorist.
I don't think Dennis Rader rates anywhere in the vicinity of being a 'genius' serial killer given how he was caught.
And just to elaborate on that, he got caught because he asked the cops if they could identify him if he sent them a floppy disk with stuff taunting his victims and boasting about his crimes. They told him no, he sent them the disk and it was packed with identifying information.

He basically doxed himself. He is one of the many serial killers who would be a lolcow if they weren't already monsters.

The Green River Killer, Gary Ridgway, one of the most prolific serial killers in history, had an IQ in the low 80s, showing that success at such behavior is barely tied to IQ. The main reason he got away with it so much is he just stuck to low-value targets like prostitutes that nobody would miss and had a simple MO and stuck to it.

DeAngelo left a lot of his nasty DNA at his crime scenes, Zodiac didn't. And law enforcement completely bungled the case. Here's a decent article on their repeated fuck ups. It's like they don't want it to be solved.
