When Nick first started using coke recreationally I am sure that he really did keep it in the safe/only use on weekends away from the kids/etc.

The problem is that as Nick used more and more often that stopped being true. But like any 'I don't have a problem' addict, it got worse and worse but in his head he's still that responsible person only dabbling a little and under control. Nick can't seperate what he wanted to do (party with coke and whores responsibly) with what he did do (end up in a crackden strung out not feeding his kids) because he was too high to understand he was constantly taking another step over the line he set until he was a mile away.
