Good Bad Movie Discussion and Recommendations - Bad Movie Connoisseurs Looking for Hidden Jems

My and my friends have been doing a weekly Bad Movie Double Bill for more than 10 years, so you can be assured we've seen all the classics. Your Birdemics, your Odd Life Of Timothy Green, your Mac and Me's need not apply, we are looking for that elussive stuff. Got any suggestions? Bonus points if there are shitty rips on youtube!

Personally, I like bad movies that are earnest; some terrible "artist" trying to make something they are invested in and is terrible is lightyears better than some intentionally bad schlock.

But that's not really elussive. Like Overdrawn At The Memory Bank and some others, MST3K made it.

Anything from Troma. They're over the top and a riot. Special mention to Poultrygeist: Night of the Chicken Dead

Manborg. Made in a single room for $1,100 CA. Silly and obvious they were all having a blast. Stick around after for the Bio-Cop trailer.

The Terror of Tiny Town. A gimmick western starring only midgets made in the 1930s.

Xanadu. Inoffensive, but trippy. The final nail in the coffin of disco fever.

Zombeavers. Some toxic waste turns local beavers into zombies that terrorize a nearby cabin.

I'm sure you've seen Trolls 2, but it was one of those bad movies the directors and mother's actress took seriously. They were Italian, leading to some awkward sentence choices, and any attempts to clean them up were met with fierce pushback.

If you're a fan of Christmas specific movies, there are a number of bangers I can recommend, let me know.

But yeah, anything covered in Rifftrax, Cinematic Titanic or MST3k is pretty well trodden territory for us, or at least, me and my wife.

Troma was a lot of fun for me growing up, Terror Firmer was a fun movie for 16 year old me and my entry into their ouvre. Me and one of my buddies from the group have been in a couple Troma movies as extras (he's even had some speaking lines with Lloyd!) but that kinda knowingly bad, bad movie isn't really what I am looking for.

However; if you are a fan of Xanadu, you gotta check out the Apple. It's like a spiritual sibling, a sister movie.

I don't think I have seen A Pirate Movie, I love the shitty title, will definitely check it out. (ETA, the yt link looks great, the color's are vivid and almost look like a colorized film approach, very fun pastiche)

Captain Apache is an example of the rare "Acid Western" genre. A distinct product of the late 60s/early 70s. It stars one of my favorite Western actors, Lee Van Cleef, doing red face and it has a dangerously catchy theme song.

Live Like a Cop, Die Like a Man is a Italian "Poliziotteschi" film, a sub-genre of crime and action films that focus on police. It's about a pair of elite undercover cops who are licensed to kill. Very 70s, much Italian, wow.

I saw A Pirate Movie as a kid and didn't realize it was a movie version of The Pirates of Penzance until I had grown up. For some reason (due to its comedy and cheesiness,) I thought it was a Cannon film, although I might have been confusing it with the movie "Pirates!"

EDIT: I just remembered a really good bad Western: "Yellow Hair and the Fortress of Gold", a movie that seems aimed at kids, but has a surprising amount of gore and violence in it. It came out in 1984, (and tries to ride off the success of Indiana Jones) but looks like it was made in the late 60s. A weird, surreal little movie.

Speaking of Christmas movies, Santa's Slay is one of those "So bad, it's good" films, as it features Pro Wrestler Goldberg as a ramping Santa Claus that kills people in various creative ways and says shitty puns while doing so!

Mortal Kombat Annihilation is one of my favorite so bad it's good movies.
The acting, the costumes, the fight choreography and the CGI are all so goofy, it's charming. And it was really expensive for the time, makes it even funnier.

I haven't seen it yet, but have heard Moonfall is a great bad good movie.

Moonfall is pretty fun.

I went on a date with someone to Moonfall. Several things lowkey went wrong:

• I walked by her on the street because she looked nothing like her photo.
• She forgot to get the tickets in advance like she said she would.
• She ran out of energy by the end.
• She thought Moonfall was one of the greatest things she'd ever seen.
• She smelled. Bad.

However; if you are a fan of Xanadu, you gotta check out the Apple. It's like a spiritual sibling, a sister movie.

Admittedly, I did genuinely enjoy the mixture of the big band and acid rock segment. I never expected those two to go well together.

I'll check it out!

What made Lloyd bad bad?

Bad bad to me are movies made intentionally to be schlocky or kitchey or "bad on purpose"... I like movies that were an earnest effort that just suck. Tiptoes, for example.

Movie (story/date) tax:
I had a history of seeing shit or age-innappropriate movies incidently as a kid and taking my friends or dates. For my 12th birthday I took my friends to see Beautiful Mind. We would later see Munich as another example.

First date movies for me as a poon hungry go-getter; grade 6, Final Fantasy: The Spirit Within, because my mom didnt want us seeing The Wedding Planner on our first date... Tomb Raider. Shrek 2. Later; Ladder 49. That girl was real handsy and when we came up for air she noticed and uncontrollably laughed at Jaquin Phoenix's hairlip. Based.

Intentionally good bad movies are very difficult to pull off (see also Birdemic II) probably because they're basically comedies, and bad comedies are really, really painful.

I wish I could suggest more bad movies made in earnest, but I don't watch a lot of movies anymore, and most of my bad movie recommendations are mainstream or from friends who live far away.

Definitely based. If you have a next first date, show her Movie 43. If you're going on dates that aren't the first date, show her Movie 43.

I recommend Devil Story. I was initially about 50/50 it might have been an intentional parody, but after looking it, it was definitely meant to be serious. Yet it somehow has better punchlines than actual comedies.

Movie 43 is so painful lol, if that's up your alley check out The Underground Comedy Movie (starring a very drunk Slash from GnR!) and InAPPropriate Comedy, both by Vince Offer, the ShamWow guy, financed with shady Israeli funding meant to corrupt our youth. Good thing fucking nobody saw them!

Also, black history month is coming and even though the other guys are exceedingly more liberal than me, shit gets fucking NUTS for our theme months. We watched Africa Adio last year. <3
