I think it's a combination of factors. Covid and the lockdowns forcing kids into online schools and not being able to socialize properly is I think the biggest factor in all of this. the UCSD report on their latest cohorts was eye opening on that front.

covid didn't help anybody but it's not why the kids are struggling with reading, although the educational system loves to put the blame there, just like the healthcare system was already extremely fucked and is very happy to have covid as an excuse
