I don't really think of the "very poorest among us" as being the main people who I think of when I hear the term "working class." It's not that I want bad things to happen to homeless fent addicts, they are by and large also people who have been failed by the system, but the group I have the most sympathy for are the working poor. The people who are working 40+ hours a week and still barely holding on. Those are the people that used to be the core of left wing politics, and it's a group that the downwardly mobile middle class who make up the core of modern leftist politics are at best bemused by and at worst actively hateful towards. No wonder Will doesn't understand why Democrats lose elections. His sympathies are with the mentally ill guy causing a scene on the subway and not the ordinary working class people who have to endure the deprevations of the schizolumpen.
