The government would be reopened right now if the senate simply passed the same bill the house did without modifications. But now because of this stupid weed thing there is still airplanes sitting on the tarmac and ATCs going unpaid. We have to wait until Wednesday for the house to get back to work and pass a modified version that matches theirs. That gives the democrats a little more leverage to argue that its not a "clean CR" and try to convince a few Republicans to cuck out. Imagine how bad the optics will look for the Republicans if the government is still closed on Friday while they fight over Delta 8.

I think Trump is talking about the government backed "public option" that Obama removed from Obamacare because he was a coward afraid of the health insurance lobby.

Why can’t we just let people buy Medicare coverage like seniors?

The biggest problem with opening Medicare to everyone is that it would likely result in the most expensive people moving to it instead of healthy which would ironically drive cost upward. A viable solution would be the Bernie Sanders "Medicare for all" which eliminated private insurance nearly entirely and enrolls everyone in Medicare. Basically single payer health care. Imagine the irony if it was Donald Trump to suggest this. The democrats including Bernie would suddenly oppose it and fight tooth and nail to stop it.

I was curious since this is one of the only right wing places I have an account on, and I skimmed a few post that seem glad the shutdown is nearing an end: why? The ACA is going to be absolutely gutted (if not now, then by Reps in December) and regardless of where you stand here Dems were right for sticking it out. Schumer and moderates (like Fetteryahu) should be ashamed and culled from the DNC for throwing the lead they had.

I can give some insight here.

If you were absolutely at the bottom and/or in the uninsurable category, The ACA could have been a good deal for you. I know a lot of people at different places that I worked that only had health coverage because a congenital issue they had that would have previously made them uninsurable now couldn't be used to hedge them out - good shit, right?

Well, the execution is the problem. The ACA was put forward on the express intention of it being a framework that would be used to launch towards better. Not only did the Democrats not follow that shit up (because there was a sizable number of them that wanted to use it to springboard for an NHS-style system, which would have been a fucking disaster in the USA), but the way Obama got the support for it from the insurance companies was with a mandate - basically, every American citizen was required to have health insurance, even if it was outright junk insurance, unless they took in so little money that it was literally unaffordable. What was the enforcement method they used to force you to buy in?

Taking your fucking Tax Refund. I know people who made $20,000 a year, were well below the federal poverty line, and yet wound up giving half or more of their refund to the government every year for failure to have the junk insurance the ACA mandated. This was a case where if you had state-program insurance, it might not even help you, because only specific plans were recognized. Filing your taxes is already a do-it-yourself ass fucking, and now you have the ACA upgrading that to Horse Dildo Status.

The insurance companies made ten shitloads of money, and the majority of us just got poorer for it.

Best argument I can make: Right now we're giving some people a subsidy on buying insurance through a government marketplace. Currently regardless of income, but set to be means tested soon.

This hurts companies and employees that put a priority on having good healthcare with low premium for the employee as part of their compensation and employers / employees who hire / work full-time in general. They have to pay into the system that subsideses other people's healthcare without receiving the benefits for it.

You can replace this system where instead of a subsidy for buying insurance through the government marketplace, the government gives you the equivalent amount into an account that can be used for purchasing insurance or paying for other healthcare expenses.

This creates less distortions in the market, making it so a low paid full-time employee does not subsidize a well payed contractor. And forces insurance companies to compete with people using those dollars to purchase healthcare services directly instead of through insurance, driving down insurance prices.
