Funko Pop maker admits it might not survive another year as sales crash

Funko has warned investors that it may not survive another year after reporting a sharp decline in sales and issuing a formal notice about its financial stability.

The collectibles giant behind the Pop Vinyl brand posted net sales of $250.9 million for the third quarter of 2025, down 14% from the same period last year, and recorded a net loss of roughly $1 million, according to its latest financial filing. The company cited falling demand, higher tariffs, and tighter retailer inventories as major challenges in what it described as a “difficult retail environment.“

Funko’s troubles follow years of explosive growth fueled by its vinyl collectibles, which once dominated shelves at Walmart, Target, and comic book stores. But as overproduction flooded the market and consumer interest waned, the company’s once-steady profits began to collapse. Reports from industry tracker ICv2 show that Funko’s U.S. sales plunged 20% year-over-year, accounting for most of its overall revenue drop.

“Substantial doubt” over Funko’s future

In its latest SEC filing, Funko said there is “substantial doubt about our ability to continue as a going concern for the next 12 months,” acknowledging that without new funding or an acquisition, it could breach loan covenants and default on debt obligations. The company has roughly $250 million in total debt and has already amended its credit agreement twice in 2025 to secure covenant relief.

Funko says it will focus on smaller product lines such as Bitty Pops, blind-box collectibles, and its Pop Yourself kiosks while “exploring strategic alternatives,” including a potential sale. Once a billion-dollar powerhouse of pop-culture merchandise, the company now faces its most uncertain year yet.

Funko Pops walked so Labubus could run.

Seriously though, Pops are a scourge on humanity. If you've been to a comic or game convention in the last 10 years, like half of the booths only sell these fucking things. Just walls and walls of them.

Golden Girls Funko Pops are a thing for some reason. I don't know why those aren't selling like hot cakes.
Last time I noticed one, it was some K-Pop group dressed as Toy Story characters. What is the market for something like that? That has to be something extemely niche.

Edit:
I forgot about this guy in New York City that sells comics and Funko in a store called PopFuzz. His backroom is filled to the brim. Wtf is this guy going to do?

how do you lose 250 million dollars making little plastic figurines. The bloat at this company must be insane.
Repeatedly having to do shit like this
And this is video of it having found to be done before that article about throwing away another 30 million in inventory

It's mass produced plastic trash, catering to a bunch of incredibly niche markets but the problem is the margins aren't going to be amazing(especially after licensing all of those IPs) and mass produced crap like this usually relies on economy of scale to keep profitable. Once they had to move beyond mainstream shit, and then re-releasing the 100th variation even consoomers are going to quit caring eventually without something else to move onto, including the many other plastic crap figures that actually look better.
Yeah, that's about 100 spiderman funko pop variations. Even other characters like Wolverine and Captain America have 20-40 of the fucking things.

Now imagine that for every popular movie even going back to Rocky, popular musicians, even album specific shit, retro toys, books, video games, etc.
The Star Wars list goes to 690 before even getting to the die-cast versions and other bullshit(limited releases, multi packs, larger characters, etc.).

Good, those things are retarded and only exist to trick autistic people into believing they're buying something of value when in reality they're just buying ugly action figures.

I received one of these as a gift back in 2019, around the time that gay ass Star Wars movie came out, and I’m glad I did. I really tried not to be ungrateful, but I didn’t know what to do with the thing. I placed it on a shelf and I just stared at it for a moment… really made me realize how stupid and gay pop culture item collecting is in general. Next to the Pop thing, there was the thing that came with the Death Stranding collector’s edition, the bust from Duke Nukem Forever (was tempted to leave this), some shoddy lockbox from Grand Theft Auto 4, a Hori joystick that came alongside the launch of Tekken 6… just tons of, frankly, embarrassing slop that no one thinks is cool or gives a fuck about. I was consooming product like a good little boy.

All of this crap now sits in boxes in my garage, and my shelves look so much better for it.

I did a little more research and apparently Funko literally had to destroy old stock to clear out warehouse space. This was a few years ago.

Thank you Funko for keeping landfills in business.

I went to an indoor fleamarket recently and I saw probably 200+ of these things for sale, nobody I saw was even looking at them. Took up so much space, could of put literally anything else in those booths lol

It makes even less sense when they license anime characters, any serious weeb collector gets Japanese figure imports that are like a 1:1 lookalike of the show's art style and are typically pretty cool looking. Why would you buy this ugly shit instead

That said i'm surprised nobody has tried to pull off a pog revival yet. Just think, if pogs ever get popular again we could start releasing limited edition lolcow pog sets. Just imagine it - chris chan and sonichu pogs with a special edition lumberjack bob and hoarder barb slammer set. and i'm sure the special edition 5 guys pog and horrifying blowjob zoe quinn slammer pack would sell well. I don't think the special fecund bae pack of wern pogs featuring toasterbortions, hobo life and shirtless steak eating wern slammer packs would get him any closer to any fecund ova though

and of course we can't forget the extensive cheeses of the world and IT nightmare null collections either

and i'm surprised chris chan never made any sonichu pogs of his own. He's the right age for it, you'd think it would be one of the things he'd have done at some point. Plus he could put a hole through one and wear it as an emergency sonichu medallion
Jim Sterling was big into pogs so I am going to blame them for his trooning out.

I had to laugh when they announced ones for Gundam, the franchise that exists to sell plastic model kits of giant robots to autistic twelve-year-olds. No Gundam fan was going to touch them because they already have their preferred brand of plastic crack, and the finished kits are actually posable.

Good, those things are retarded and only exist to trick autistic people into believing they're buying something of value when in reality they're just buying ugly action figures.
They're not nearly as good as action figures. Action figures can be posed into different poses. Action figures can be played with by children (or manchildren).

A funko pop is just an ugly vinyl statue. It has no utility at all. And unlike, say, an anime figurine, it only vaguely resembles what it's supposed to be. So much so that even if you are familiar with whatever it is, there's a good chance you wouldn't recognise it unless you are a White Men For Harris type Solyent urbanite who replaced his personality with bottom-of-the-barrel mass-produced pop culture slop. And it's just a thing in a box, you don't even get to assemble it yourself like a model plane or Gunpla or something. And let's be clear, action figures, anime figurines and gunpla are pretty sus things for adults to collect already - if you have any, people are going to assume you have a body pillow or an MLP cum jar. And these things are worse.

It really does signify the absolute state of pop culture in the 2010s and the kinds of people who consoomed it. All art is stripped away, leaving just a dead-eyed vinyl cube, onto which the most basic signifiers of a character's appearance are glued. Hey look, that's Harry Potter's scar, and his haircut, and his glasses! That's the only part of Harry Potter present. Nothing of his personality, the stories he is part of, the actors who portrayed him, the things he did, the things he likes. Nothing that actually matters in fiction. Just his most basic and most shallow external signifiers. Because these are not art, nor are they intended to be. They are horrid little vinyl shibboleths. The difficulty in working out what they are even supposed to be is part of the point, it is supposed to be esoteric to outsiders. "Wow, that's the Spider-Man from comic issue #49857 with the yellow bracelet! I recognise that, I will communicate to its owner that I, too, know this obscure Spider-man! We are kindred spirits, because we have read the same disposable piece of literal garbage! I base my friendships on whether we share the same very narrow pieces of pop culture!"

Thinking about it, it's no small wonder that the people who collect these things are woke shitlibs. Because shitlibbery is about signifiers, the more obscure the better. It's not about wanting the world to be better, it's about having the same pride flag and self-diagnosed mental illnesses as the next they/them. They collect badges and slogans and hair colours and pride flags and genders and imaginary disabilities and mental health diagnoses, rather than develop a personality. It's not just about signalling virtue, it's about shibboleths and trying to find friendship on the basis of symbols. And of course that's a really shit way to try to connect with people, because as soon as you disagree about one of these inconsequential things, be it using the "wrong" symbol for autism or liking the "wrong" children's novel about magical wizard children, then Friendship is Ended. They don't understand how to form actual connections, only to connect their own little colour patterns with someone else's little colour patterns, only to freak out if it's the "wrong" one.

That is all 2010s consoomer shitlib slop culture ever was. A collection of haircuts and accessories that could be plastered onto personality-free statues - be they funko pops or actual people. Signals and symbols and fashion accessories in place of real ideas or depth. Shallow art, shallow politics, shallow culture. Boiling down Geralt of Rivia into a haircut and a pair of boots and stripping him of his personality and getting furious when people notice. Instead of Star Wars being about the Hero's Journey, courage, personal growth, sacrifice and the triumph of freedom over tyranny, they tried to make it only about laser swords and TIE Fighters and Darth Vader's fucking helmet, meaningless symbols that you can stick on an ugly vinyl blob and convince idiots is the same thing. And once you convince those idiots that Space Wizards and Laser Swords was all Star Wars was, you can gut it and replace it with political propaganda, which the same idiots will swallow, and they will buy the ugly vinyl cube because it has a laser sword and that mean's it's Luke Skywalker, and then you can make Luke Skywalker a bitter old coward who betrayed his friends, and those same idiots will fight for your right to do that because all he ever was to them was a guy with a laser sword. Hollowing out culture like that means you can fill the hole with your own vile ideas and have a ready-made army of zombies ready to defend your vandalism because you've convinced them that if it can't be glued onto a funko pop, it wasn't really culture to start with.

I hate funko pops. I hate the people that make them. I hate the people who make the bastardised pop culture that made them possible. And I hate the mindless idiots that buy them. Fuck.

That has been my essay about funko pops that I wrote while waiting for someone to call me who is supposed to call me but hasn't and I'm going to fucking strangle him when I get hold of him. I hope you like it.

I worked at McDonald's during the Beanie Baby craze and had a miserable time, but I would have loved those toys as a child since I collected teddy bears.

Funko Pops are just plastic junk that barely resemble the character they're supposed to portray. Instead of dumping them in landfills, it would be nice to repurpose them into artificial reefs like we do with other kinds of garbage but they're probably too toxic for that purpose.
