Orange Man not being on the ticket was the least of the Republicans' problems in 2022. They opted to select a soyman, Kevin McCarthy, as their "leading figure," and he ran as a single-issue imbecile on Ukraine ("Um ackshually Dems are doing it wrong with saving democracy, I know a better way to do it!!!") and only that. McCarthy didn't even try to highlight Biden's dementia/corruption, and accordingly got ousted as speaker less than a year after '22 the election.

Something had to of happened. Christie won in 2013 with 60% of the vote and then his lieutenant governor promptly lost in 2017 in a landslide election. The next election in 2021 was closer but now it's looking like 2025 is another blowout.
Machine politics shifting and changing
Kentucky is a poor state that lives on government handouts and was solidly Democrat in living memory. Rand Paul was strenuously opposed by the state GOP, as was Massie, but they both won due to grassroots support. The state GOP is largely concerned with keeping federal dollars flowing into the state. They still like to vote for Democrat governors because at the state level, Republicans aren't very good at messaging handouts.

Republicans as a whole unfortunately don't seem all that great at voter mobilization during non-Presidential elections.
